iPhone in Canada: A Petition for Lower Data Costs

Sun, Jun 24, 2007 | by Stéphane Dion

iPhone News

Rogers_iphone_canada_2 iPhone release date and Network partner for Canada have not been confirmed yet but Canadians are already signing a petition to ask Rogers Wireless to lower its data costs for the upcoming iPhone.

The petition already has nearly 600 signatures.

We, the future users of the Apple iPhone, living in Canada, would like to see an unlimited data plan at a reasonable price, comparable to those seen in the United States, prior to the Q4-2007 release of the iPhone in Canada.

Increasing numbers of users have paid several hundred, and in some cases more than $1000, during one month for data usage that would have not been charged extra on any other North American carrier on their best data plan.

This 25 megabyte limit was designed back when Mobile Phones only did email. The iPhone can do much more than email. Fido Wireless has no data limit. Bell Mobility recently eliminated their 100 megabyte cap. TELUS Mobility now offers a 250 megabyte BlackBerry plan for $100 per month. We would like to see a comparable data plan given to Canadian iPhone users. Data usage charges are outrageous compared to other global markets!

Can this have in impact on Rogers? I’m not sure, but it certainly worth the try!

    Dear Apple,

We appreciate all that you have done in the world of technology, we truly do. However, we have been very disappointed with the route you have taken with the iPhone and will explain why below:
    • You said the iPhone has OS X; this makes it a phone, an iPod, an Internet device AND a MOBILE COMPUTER. The strong hold you have on it greatly reduces the potential of the iPhone. You encourage developers to work on OS X compatible apps. Why not on the iPhone? You said because it could bring down ATT’s network? That’s just silly, windows mobile is as open as can be and has been for as long as WM3 many years ago. ATT’s network is up and running, allow Native Apps on the iPhone will encourage even more sales!
    • Bluetooth, imagine the potential if you opened up Bluetooth on the iPhone; file sharing over Bluetooth, pairing with Bluetooth GPS receivers and competing with the likes of Garmins and Tomtoms of that market… That opens up the iPhone to a new market, and again MORE MONEY for Apple.
    • Video Recording. Are you kidding me? Why can’t the iPhone record videos? MAKES NO SENSE!
    • OPEN UP THE iPHONE! YOU ARE LOSING POTENTIAL BUYERS AS A RESULT, YOUR CHOICE TO HAVE THIS STRONGHOLD ON SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DEVICE IS HURTING YOU, IT DOESN’T ENCOURAGE INNOVATION OR TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT.

PLEASE OPEN UP THE iPHONE, LET THIS DEVICE REACH IT’S ULTIMATE POTENTIAL.

Current fan soon to be back to pc if you don’t change your dictatorship ways!

thank you for linking to my petition. It now has almost 3300 signatures, and I was interviewed by CBC yesterday about the iPhone coming to Canada, and the ridiculous prices. Thanks !
