According to our Tipster Jason (thanks a lot!), an AT&T representative from the North Shore Boston area said that the only iPhone data plan available would be the Media Max Unlimited Plan, which goes for $39.99. The Media plan gives you unlimited instant messaging for you iPhone but also gives the user unlimited access to Media Net and AT&T Video. Here’s how AT&T describes Media Net:
Media Net gives you access to all the cool things you can do with your wireless phone: email, Web sites, games, and more. It is wireless Internet access for your wireless device.
- Mail & Messaging: Check your Yahoo! Mail, MSN Hotmail and chat with friends with Yahoo! Messenger and Upoc.
- Sports: Get the latest scores from CBS SportsLine and ESPN.
- Ringtones, Games, and Graphics: Personalize your phone by downloading your favorites.
- News & Finance: Stay informed with round-the-clock headlines from CNN.
- Entertainment: Get local movie times and reviews, dining recommendations, and more.
- Weather & Travel: Check your forecast from The Weather Channel, get flight times, and traffic reports.
It is already assumed that you should be able to subscribe to the calling plan of your choice. The cheapest AT&T calling plan right now goes for $39.99. An internal AT&T memo also revealed last week that iPhone lovers can subscribe to FamilyTalk plans.
If you make the count, you are at $80 before the fees and taxes. Expensive? Of course, but that was expected. After all, it’s the iPhone!
We have all the reasons to believe that the information really comes from an AT&T Rep., but maybe that Rep. just has a very creative mind. If you pass by an AT&T corporate store, stop by and ask them if they can confirm the information.

This makes no sense. THe lowest data plan is far superior for the iphone if you do not spend all day texting. If I want the 19.99 plan with unlimited access to Media Net and AT&T Video, why should I pay an extra $20 per month for text messages I won’t use??????????? If they hold every buyer to the $80 per month minimum, I think they’ll cut off half of the potential market who would make the iphone the absolute winner in cellular land. Perhaps this is why they are ramping up the excitement: to drop the “rate plan bomb” when we have all made the commitment to purchase “no matter what” AT&T throws at us!

Dgonz,
I hope you are right DGonz. Overpay the monthly plan is a bummer.
I can’t wait to see the contract we will also have to sign though… We still don’t know what will be the cancellation fee.

I just want to buy the phone. I do not want to sign a contract. I will pay what ever they want to charge for the equipment alone. up to 1200.00 or so.

If you plan to use the phone as a phone. The cheapest individual AT&T plan for phone use is 39.99, unless you have a group or family plan then it gets cheaper per person. I believe WIFI is free, so your internet will be free, only if you get a wifi connection, there is edge tech
for abbreviated version of internet, used alot to fetch emails. This service will cost an additional 19.99 a month.

yes, but is a data plan required?

I have used the phone for a couple of days now and the EDGE internet data speeds are excellent. WiFi works like a charm. The phone is simply the best. It’s everything it is hyped up to be and more.
Imagine not having to lug your laptop around anymore.
Richard, if you still want an iPhone, I would definitely be interested in talking to you about it.

You could buy it and not sign up for a plan, then you just have a wireless web browser.

I do believe that you will be able to buy the new 3G iphone for $250.
Just sign the contract and then cancel it. Viola (or is it walla)…. Presto.
I’m sure this will anger the sales person who just spent all of this time with you answering your questions and getting you set up but…
Hmm… Seems to easy.

The rumor I heard was that you will have to sign up for a plan in order to get the phone.
ATT will not offer just a straight purchase. Just sign up then cancel (then jailbreak then this then that…).

Its not that simple as signing up with the contract just to cancel… dont u guys think that they thought of that already. im sure your cancelation fee will be thru the roof.
