In an interview with the Associated Press, John McLaughlin of www.uniquephones.com, the Northern Ireland Company behind one of the proven iPhone unlocking software, says that if they go ahead with the sale of their "software only"-"iPhone unlocking solution", the price will be $25 per iPhone. McLaughlin also said that their mailing list is now just below the 500 000 mark! The temptation to go ahead and risk being sued my AT&T or Apple must be extremely high for these guys. Millions of dollars are at stake.
But as AP explained in their article, unlocking the phone for one’s own use, for instance to place calls with a different carrier, appears to be legal. But if it’s done for financial gain, the legality is less certain.
If you were John McLaughlin, would you release the software?

I am from spain, and I am going to U.S.A. the next week, I am interestign in buying a iphone, the thing is that I have an important question, if I only can use with AT&T, what does it means? because I read alot about iphone unlocking, but I’d like to buy the iphone now and then unlock the iphone, but if I have to do a contract with AT&T for 2 years, have I to pay 2 years to AT&T? or they only give me a new sim, with a different number and then I have to use AT6T network and pay my calls and sms? thank you very much, bye

jorge,
You don’t have to sign a 2 year contract when you buy the iPhone from AT&T. The contract is signed when you register using iTunes. Don’t do the registration process, unlock your phone and you’ll be a free man.
