Since the iPhone came out last June, the iPhone buzz was pretty much around iPhone hacking. We’ve seen everything, starting with a jailbreaking program to games and unlocking solutions.

Companies were even beginning to structure themselves around what could even be considered an after market for the iPhone.

But it looks like when Steve Jobs said “no 3rd party apps” on the iPhone, he meant it. The market is gone. At least for today…

Since the last iPhone upgrade, no 3rd party application can be uploaded on the iPhone and the ones already installed are kicked out by the 1.1.1 firmware upgrade. Even worst, all the unlocking solutions currently on the market are useless for now.

If we look at how complicated the iPod Touch hacking
seems to be compared to the iPhone before the 1.1.1 upgrade, the iPhone
hacking market seems to have a cloudy future. With the security
breaches closed down by Apple engineers, hackers might have a tough
time jailbreaking the iPhone now. And without a reliable jailbreaking
solution, you can kiss all these 3rd party apps and unlocking solution currently on the market goodbye.

What will have a value now, are the “not upgraded yet” iPhones. The
ones that we can still install the applications we want. The ones that
can work on any GSM network around the world. The ones that give us the
freedom of choosing what is good for us or not. Check ebay in the next
few weeks, unlocked iPhone prices might reach skyrocked prices.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Jobs’ plan to stop the hackers.
I was not sure how Apple and AT&T would preserve the integrity of
their long term exclusive deal. They had to do something about this.
Right? And they did. Is it solid? Only time will tell. For now, it’s
iPhone hackers 1 and Apple engineers 1.

Not only can you kiss third party apps you can kiss my iPhone goodbye. It sure is pretty, but I hate it. I can’t do anything on it. I don’t care to have to get pissed off when a company takes my TODO LIST (for crying out loud) out of my phone.

I’ll take an 8225 any day.

I agree, I still have my 8525 just in case I go nuts with the iphone, i love the interface and stuff, but having to spend time and stress about the $600 toy become useless beacuse “i thought” it was mine and I could PLAY with it, is ridiculous.

Agreed. I had a treo for a few years and loved how simple AND functional it was. The iPhone is pretty but there are major functionality gaps for a PDA phone. It’s annoying that Apple is being so proprietary with my iPhone.

Here’s a video interview of the 17 y.o. kid that started the iPhone hack that I found tonight on Webcastr.com.

    Worth watching!

You can still downgrade your phone - bricked or not - to 1.0.2. The trick is to get a copy of iTunes 7.3.2 and do a local restore. This works even for the complete morons who upgraded an unlocked phone (and for people who’s virgin phones got screwed).
