I’ve just read yet another article that asks… "is the iPhone really a Smartphone?", and goes about analyzing the definition of a "smartphone", pointing out some of the well known missing features, cool things about Blackberry, WM or Symbian, etc.
Many good points, that are all true… truly. And I take special interest in them since I was notably obsessed with mobile content and capabilities for years, back in the good old days, before Apple gave us a phone. My partner and I were, quite a while ago now, creating Flash swf’s, bluetoothing them from an iMac onto a Nokia, and Boom! What could be cooler?!
Well… now we know. Apple has instantly offered an insanely great web experience on the iPhone, like no one else has been able to. Everyone hacking the iPhone is very cool, and this is going to lead to some great things I’m sure, but the fact that it already handles a lot of web content very efficiently is the most compelling to me.
I never became an expert at Symbian development, and now it’s not
going to happen, but I understood the strategy behind connecting a
handset app to a server, and actually doing it elegantly and usefully.
With the massive infrastructure the internet empowers us with, it
shouldn’t be that much drama.
I’m sure Flash, and 3(or 4)G is coming, while the collection of WiFi
installments worldwide grows rapidly. There are plenty of ideas to keep
us content while we’re waiting. Have you seen how beautifully iPhone
Safari handles CSS? And, specifically, CSS that is designed for this
space? And, generally, if it works well on my iPhone, it will look and
behave that way on every iPhone in the World.
This… is smart.
