In my infinite laziness, I waited to update to 1.1.2 until it appeared in iTunes this evening.
The update took exactly 5 minutes.
Then the phone restarted; as normal it disappeared from iTunes briefly. And I saw an image on the screen I’d never seen before: what looked like the iPhone and a cable with an arrow, as if instructing me to keep the iPhone connected as it rebooted.
That lasted about 3 seconds, then iPhone popped up a blue message box telling me it was reactivating, and this could take some time.
Exactly 1 minute later, iPhone gave me a new message box, stating the activation was complete.
"iPhone is activated," it said. My beloved device reappeared in iTunes with the new charge status icon next to the eject button, and I am good to go!
This update was so easy. . .it reminded me of what the late Norman Mailer once said about Marilyn Monroe: that being with her would be as pleasant and easy as eating ice cream.
Naturally, I immediately went to see if my Wi-Fi issue had been addressed. iPhone found my dlink router instantly and connected. Woo-hoo: big change for me! Ymmv, tho’.
I ran to the farthest corner of my house to check the signal
indicator — it was good! Wi-Fi at 2 arcs, not just the bottom dot. And
call me crazy, but Safari does seem a tad snappier; I went to a heavy
chat bulletin board site to check.
Stocks and weather also seemed a tad more lively, but maybe, as one
commenter on my previous post said, that’s just wishful perception. I
will note that I had 1.08 gig free before this monster update.
Now I’m down to 978mg. So something seriously changed.
As for the groovy new internationalization settings, let me say that
I do in fact send email to the UK and France for my work; I also happen
to just personally speak Italian. So it’s all good for me.
I can switch to UK when I need to so my colleagues will stop sending
me back snarky comments about how to spell "programme" and mail will
arrive with the correct date & time formats to eliminate confusion.
Hopefully iPhone will also be more accepting of the email I send in
French if I switch to that setting — and stop correcting it in the
craziest manner!
Ok readers, please tell me your own update stories below! Can those
of you with linksys routers update your firmware on both devices and
tell me how the connectivity has changed?

I’ve completed the upgrade but not without some difficulty. After instructing iTunes to go ahead with the upgrade to 1.1.2, I left it to itself to complete.
Upon my return I had a message telling me that the update had failed (sorry, I don’t remember the exact wording of the error message). Furthermore, the iPhone was dead. When I powered it up, it tried to boot and then displayed the iTunes logo with a connector cable.
My only recourse was to hit the Restore button in iTunes. After accepting the appropriate warnings about losing all my data, iTunes did the restore (to 1.1.2) and restored my backup as well. It appears that most things have been restored.
I say “most” because I’m not quite sure yet. I sync my iPhone with two Windows XP computers: One at work for Calendar, Contacts, and Podcasts, the other at home for my music. I did the upgrade at work and hence, after the restore, none of the music is present. I’ll have to resync at home to see if the music appears properly (which I expect it will).
So, not as clean as your experience, but not a complete disaster either.

Ouch Mark — that seems pretty painful to me! You’re more patient than I, let me say. But all’s well that ends well, so I’m happy for you. How’s your battery life and Wi-Fi connectivity? Improved? Do tell! Thanks!

I can’t say for Battery life… too soon to tell (I keep my iPhone docked most of the day so it rarely runs down).
Wi-Fi and Edge both ’seem’ a bit faster but again that just may be wishful thinking. I never had (noticed?) the Wi-Fi problems you experienced (and I use a linksys wireless router at home).
BTW, I did manage to re-sync all my music from the home computer but I ran into a weird glitch. After loading 576 of 580 songs, the sync process just quit on the PC but the iPhone thought it was still syncing. iTunes (7.5) didn’t even show the iPhone as connected. I had to “Slide to stop syncing”, wait for the iPhone to abort the Sync (which took several minutes), disconnect and reconnect and restart the sync process. The 4 remaining songs then synced.
I find this concerning as I never had ANY sync problems prior to this update.

I like the old iPhoneFreak.com font headline at the top of this site, it’s what originally attracted me to your site. Off topic, but the new one looks cheesey.

I noticed the Connect to Itunes icon also.
Also not sure if this was there before but I also noticed a charg icon after my iphone died.

Hey guys -
I had a little problem with the update as for some reason, my iPhone would not be recognized by iTunes after restarting and reaching the iTunes logo with dock connector screen…. I restarted my computer and everything wrapped up fine, but if I didn’t my iPhone was not working… I was hoping for a seamless upgrade like I’ve always had, but this was a small hiccup to endure… I just wish it told me what the problem was (I never actually received an error), because someone who is less computer savvy than me might not think to restart the computer.
My real complaint now is really nit-picky I guess, but after the update the status indicator for my headset no longer shows up on the iPhone screen when plugged into my computer. It used to have that great translucent battery to indiciate the phone’s battery level, and a similar translucent headset to indicate the headset battery level, but now it’s gone! I see the battery indicator in the title bar, but I liked seeing the battery level on the screen… anyone know if that was a mistake? or purposeful?
Other than that, it does seem a bit snappier… but I have no data to back that opinion up.
Thanks

Fixed it… same thing as the computer! Just had to shut the phone off and turn it back on again. Apparently, my bluetooth wasn’t working AT ALL. Weird.
