iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 Leak: Customize Your iPhone Home Screen

It looks like someone is stealing Steve Jobs' MacWorld keynote scoop with this one! That right guys, Andru from Gearlive has an iPhone upgraded to what would apparently be the iPhone firmware 1.1.3

So, what should we expect from the iPhone firmware 1.1.3? Here's a list of what was discovered so far:

  • Home screen shuffling and reorganizing of the icons. This includes "multiple page" management
  • Multiple recipient SMS sending
  • A "Locate Me" feature on Google Maps (Probably using Cellphone tower triangulation).
  • Hybrid mode in Google Maps (Map and satellite views on the same image)
  • Safari bookmarks on the home screen

Have a look at the video to see how you will soon be able to move things around on your iPhone home page. Cool stuff!

Did I mention that, if you have an unlocked iPhone, you won't be able to upgrade to 1.1.3? Giz has an interesting story on this. Check it out.

Release date? No one can tell right now...

iPhone Earphone Review: Altec Lansing Upgrader Series

Earphones

Altec Lansing was kind enough to send iPhonefreak two of their latest earphone sets made especially for the iPhone. The UHS306 and UHS301 products are from Altec Lansing's Upgrader Series released earlier this year. Besides having all the features of the original earbuds bundled with the iPhone, Altec Lansing's earphones have a handy in-line volume control.

What's so special about these products? Well, the Upgrader Series earphones have been designed and classified based on activities and wearing style. Activities include gaming, airplane, running, exercise, walking, relaxation and work.

In a sense, this is enough to make the Upgrader Series a special product line. There are so many types of earphones and headphones on the market today, that creating this classifying system simplifies your buying decision, and as I said, just for that, the Upgrader series is a great product line.

The Status of Aussie iPhones

KoalaThe folks down in Australia seem to be wanting iPhones really bad as rumors float about the Land Down Under may finally get it made available to them by February. In the meanwhile, what the Aussies have been doing to get by is hacking iPhones from overseas of course.

Prepaid Earth recently interviewed a group of self-described iPhone hackers in Australia about getting their hands on the Apple mobile and what they did with it. These hackers talked about loving to take on a large company like Apple and the rush it brought. They also commented on how they get hold of iPhones since the product is not yet for sale in Australia - the common practice seems to be to buy it online, have it shipped to an address in the United States and then have it forwarded from there.

There are of course plenty of references online on how to hack an iPhone. There's even an online tutorial on how to Australianise your iPhone. How cool is that?

iPhone Case Review: Prima Lateral Leather Case

Img_751930

I've seen products from Prima Cases a few times, but this was really the first opportunity I had to try one of their products.

The case I received from Prima is called the Lateral Leather Case for the iPhone. This is a hard shell leather case with a low profile belt clip and a recessed magnetic flap closure. The interior of thecase is made of smooth velvet lining, to avoid scratches on the iPhone. The product comes in a nice but standard packaging.

iSuppli Breaks Down iPhone versus iPod touch

IphonetouchWhat do you get when you teardown an iPod touch? Research firm iSuppli recently did just that, discovering that the touch "is more than an iPhone without a phone."

iSuppli found as it took apart the iPod touch that "sports a distinct design and unique advancements compared to the iPhone." The 8GB version was examined, with the firm finding the portable media player is an iPhone minus several things such as cell phone ability and Bluetooth. From here is was estimated that "the iPod touch and iPhone designs have a 90 percent commonality in terms of components."

It is at this point though iSuppli finds more distinctions between the two, feeling the iPod touch is optimized for form factor and cost requirements. It cites that to cut space usage, for example, the touch uses some advanced packaging for its components not seen in the iPhone." It notes also how the touch design is high in memory density with its 16GB of NAND flash memory compared to the iPhone's 8GB.

New iPhone Cases Released by Tekkon

Tekkoniphonecases_2

Tekkon, a company which produces accessories for mobile devices like the iPod, has unveiled a new line of cases for the iPhone. Four cases are part of this new line up and they are priced from between $30 and $33.

The most interesting of these new Tekkon cases is a hard case with soft touch. Tekkon says this particular case "provides the durability of rubber or silicone without the bulk." It wraps around the mobile and also offers a flip up, transparent protective cover for the touchscreen.

The other three new Tekkon cases are made of premium leather. They include a leather sleeve with bi-directional swivel clip, wallet case with removable strap and credit card pocket and a flip case with removable clip and credit card pocket. The last two cases also have non-magnetic closures, which Tekkon says it did to prevent magnetic interference with the iPhone.

Intuit Brings Quicken to iPhone

QuickeniphoneHow religiously do you use your computer to track your finances? Is Quicken your second most used application after Outlook? Intuit, the developer of the extremely popular financial management software, is betting that if you answer yes to these questions you'll want to use your iPhone to help track your expenses.

The software company, according to Reuters, plans to launch on Jan. 8 an online service which will "store the financial data of its users on server computers, protecting communications with customers using the same kinds of technology that banks use to secure online transactions."

This new offering will reportedly work with Apple's iPhone as well as an Internet brower, added Reuters, and will not require any installed software. No further details were given about the upcoming offering, though it is expected to be a pay-for service.

French Unlocked iPhones not Really Unlocked After All

Iphone_sdk

I must admit that Apple never cease to amaze me. When we think that they will have to do something or that they will make a specific move, they come up with something we couldn't think of.

That is the case once again with the French unlocked iPhone. It's against the law if France to lock a phone for a specific French network. We all thought that Apple would have to sell unlocked iPhone. Right? But it looks like Apple just pulled another iPhone trick from their firmware hat.

Orange does sell non-exclusive iPhones in France, but the iPhone SIM cards work only with the other French operators like Bouygues. Simply brilliant. It's not carrier-locked now but country locked…

Do Apple's engineers really plan everything in advance?

Rumor: iPhone in Japan? NTT DoCoMo the Exclusive Carrier?

Iphone_docomo_japan_3g According to the Wall Street Journal (Asia), NTT DoMoCo's president, Masao Nakamura, already had meetings with El Senor Jobs to talk about the details around a Japanese launch. The newspaper said that Apple doesn't expect to have any difficulties with the revenue sharing part of all iPhone exclusive deals.

Here's the quote from the WSJ:

"People familiar with the situation say Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs recently met with NTT DoCoMo's president, Masao Nakamura, to discuss a deal to offer its iPhone in Japan through Japan's dominant mobile operator. These people said Apple has also been talking to No. 3 operator Softbank Corp. and executives from both companies have made multiple trips to its Cupertino, Calif. headquarters."

As pointed out by Thomas from Engadget, the DoCoMo network does not support GSM/EDGE. That means that any iPhone released on DoCoMo's network would have to be a 3G iPhone

Nevertheless, put that in the rumor bin for now. If it's going to be just like in Europe, Apple will have open discussions with all the operators in Japan until they get the deal they want. Remember the Softbank iPhone rumor last May?

iPhone Perhaps Finally Getting GPS

Iphonegpspartfoundry

Is that a GPS module you see plugged into the bottom of an iPhone? Damm straight it is! Part Foundry, a developer of OEM parts and products, claims to have almost ready for distribution a true GPS solution for the iPhone. It's slated to be available this February for around $90.

Part Foundry is calling its iPhone GPS solution the locoGPS for iPhone. There is of course always a catch when it comes to third party development like this - the locoGPS will only work with jail broken iPhones. If you don't mind having a hacked phone than you can finally have what is described as that true GPS experience iPhone owners have been wanting.

Technical specifications of the locoGPS for iPhone offering include a SIRF Star III chip, 5m-10m position accuracy, an integrated mini-USB connector for pass through iPhone charging and open source software to allow for community improvements.

1.1.2 Charge Bug?

Chargebug Howdy fellow Freaks! I'm back from my Caribbean vacation – no I didn't try to take my iPhone, I know about those crazy AT&T data charges! – and it's time to recharge my beloved device. Look carefully at the pic here, please.

Yes, I saw the dreaded red bar. So I plugged iPhone into my MacBookPro and went about my daily business. 5 hours later, still red bar. Hunh?? I thought to myself. 5 hours!?!?

But, well, maybe iPhone was really really tired. I let another 2 hours pass. Flipped over iPhone, woke it up, still red bar. Whuuuh??

At hour 8 I was getting depressed when I scrutinized the icon in the top right-hand corner. Yup, the plug, not the spark.

iPhone was actually charged, but the red bar hadn't been updating to the sliding green progress one to indicate charge level.

Long-time readers know I have a virgin 4MB iPhone. So it's not a consequence of a hack or jailbreak.

I restarted my iPhone with baited breath. Whooooo. . . .

Breathing out, breathing in. . . .iPhone returned, with a normal home screen, and the upper-right hand charge icon appeared full, as would be expected.

If this happens again, I'm reporting it as an official firmware issue! Because I'm not the only one it's happened to.

Freaks, have any of you seen this yourselves?

iPhone In The Enterprise... SAP, Google and now Microsoft.

Where_2 Well... all they're saying so far is that PowerPoint 2008 will export to iPhoto, so you can sync to iPhone/iPod, to show as a slide show on the device. I'm not sure what this is describing other than eliminating a step in getting slides into iPhoto, or maybe 2 steps for some folks.

... and when you read their promo copy for this, you know they have had many iPhone integration meetings... not just with the software people, but with the sales concept teams as well. This is nice to see. They realize that folks like Google have people working overtime on RMA's (Rich Mobile Applications) for iPhone, and that applications as simple as PowerPoint don't have a comfortable future in the Mobile landscape. In other words, salespeople are wanting the kind of media delivery, and juiciness, that iPhone offers, even though most of them are carrying Windows Mobile or Blackberry handsets... for now.

And I won't even speculate about this job posting on Apple's website... 'nuff said here.

Key corporate people advocating the iPhone keeps coming up in the press recently, like in this press release about SAP's iPhone website... "SAP is breaking with precedent by introducing versions of the new software that are compatible with the iPhone ahead of ones for mobile devices that businesses traditionally use. These include Research In Motion's BlackBerry, Palm's Treo and devices that run on software from Microsoft.". This one is really pretty amazing, and one of the most pleasing paragraphs in the thousands recently found online for the "Fastest Growing Keyword On Google in 2007".

I'm sure Microsoft is working on native apps as well, even if their objectives with them aren't nailed down yet. From a development viewpoint though, I still think that Safari apps are going to where it's at for most of us.

Especially with storage, caching and high speed data on the way... we are approaching an immense amount of rich media on the web, using the iPhone, with a huge variety of content, applications, and multimedia... it's looking more like a consensus all the time.

The Shape Of Things To Come?

Apple's Garageband update allows users also using the newest version of the iPhone firmware to create custom ringtones.

We are likely to see ever-tighter integration between iPhone and Apple apps. This is a pretty unique selling proposition for Apple: Google may be able to create an integrated universe of webware, but until it's all always available offline (or people are always -- and I mean always -- online) integration with people's local desktop apps and systems will be most important, and useful.

As legit ringtone creation isn't enough excitement for one day (after all, people with jailbroken iPhones have been able to do exactly the same thing, more easily, for some time), along comes news of an app soon-to-arrive which should allow the iPhone to become the world's cheapest HD video recorder! If this is what people are cooking up before widespread access to the official Apple iPhone SDK coming early next year, I can't wait to see what people are coming up with by mid-2008!!!

iPhone Could Be Hacker Target in 2008

Ipodhackers2008News on the cyber security front yesterday brings us word that the iPhone may be in the sights of hackers in 2008. This is the prediction of Arbor Networks' Arbor’s Security and Engineering Response Team (ASERT).

ASERT believes the iPhone
will be a "victim of a serious attack" in 2008. They go on to say that "these assaults are likely to be in the form of drive by attacks – malware embedded into seemingly harmless information, images or other media that actually perform dangerous actions when rendered on the iPhone’s Web browser."

"With the scrutiny the iPhone has received since its launch earlier this year over network lock-in," added the group, "ASERT believes that hackers will be enticed by the possibility of attacking Apple users and the opportunity to "be the first" to hack a new platform."

Hmmm...wonder if we'll need to take out insurance on our iPhones? This is a scary prediction indeed if malicious hackers are feeling challenged to cause problems with our Apple mobiles. If this does indeed happen it will be interesting to see how Apple responses.

Use the iPhone and iPod Touch as a Pro Tools Audio Software Remote Control

If you are a recording musician, this post is for you. Pro Tools LE, an audio recording software, can now be controlled using the iPhone or iPod Touch screen. Watch the video for a full demo.

Alex Lelievre, the developer behind this really cool app, said he plans to sell it once Apple certifies its code (once the SDK is out next February…). The apps looks really great, it has detailed feedback on track status, including audio signal feeds and transport controls. At least in the video, no apparent legacy problems can be seen.

The server is currently Mac only, but Alex said to Gizmodo that it should be easy to port to Windows later on. The "ProRemote" will be going into beta next week and you'll need a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch to run the application.

Here's how he technically describe the remote control:

Use an iPhone case as a Flip Stand

Covercase_iphone_3 Many iPhones cases have been released so far, but very few are really newsworthy. Nevertheless, the ToughCase introduced by CoverCase looks interesting. The leather case wrap your iPhone and iPod into an ultra-portable hard leather case with flip design that fits in your pocket.

The new cases offers a hard shell combined with soft Napa suede lining, leather coat and screen protector. ToughCase’s built-in "Flipp" slot lets you watch video or conference call that acts like stand. I don't know about you, but I watch videos with the iPhone on the side...

Playstation Emulator for iPhone Soon?

Iphone_playstation_emulator

According to ZodTTD, an independent software developer, we could soon see a Sont Playstation emulator for Apple iPhone.

We're not talking about PS3 games here, but original Sony Playstation games such Buster Bros and Tactics Ogre. Still pretty cool. Isn't it?

No word on when exactly the software could be release but a beta version could be available to people who donated money for the project.

iPhone Sales Limit Back to Five Units

Buy_iphone Apple confirmed to Wired that you can now buy up to five iPhones if you wish. The limit has been upgraded from two to five late last week.

The company did not say why the limit was raised since it was lowered only last October. Wired is risking an explanation by saying that Apple probably discovered it had sufficient units on hand to meet Holiday demand. Nevertheless, I love my iPhone but I don't need five.

What about buying iPhone with cash? Forget it! You still can't buy an iPhone with cash. Period.

Lower Your Long Distance iPhone Calls with Jajah

Jajah_web_app_iphone_ipod_touch_2 Jajah just launched their new Jajah iPhone Web application. The new app comes with the look and feel of the iPhone's dial pad and address book enabling users to make low-cost global calling directly from the iPhone and iPod Touch. And there’s no jailbreaking and no software to install.

Here’s how it works:
You simply point your mobile Safari browser to http://iphone.jajah.com and type in the number you want to call. You can also select the name in your Jajah contacts and click on the number you want to call. I know what you think, and no, this can’t be done from the iPhone address book. Maybe later with the promised iPhone SDK? JAJAH will call your phone, you pick up, and you will be connected to the desired international number. You can call any phone anywhere in the world (landline or mobile) without the need of an international calling plan - registration is free, there is no contract and no monthly fee, just big savings.

Jajah says that depending where you’re located and where you’re calling to, the service can be as low as 2 to 3 cents per minute. I’ve tried it in Canada to Canada, and the cost was 8 cents per minute. That is still cheap and could be an extremely good alternative when you’re roaming internationally. I’ll be in Vegas in January for the CES and I’ll use Jajah exclusively. I’ll let you know what my experience was.

Rumor: iPhone Firmware Update 1.1.3 this Week

Iphone_firmware_update_113 According to a report on CNet France, the iPhone firmware update 1.1.3 could be released in the next few days.

The rumor (don't forget...) says that a voice recording mode could be released as well as a disk mode. The  voice recording mode would let you capture lectures and voice memos and the disk mode would work just like the iPod does and will still block users from simply dragging and dropping content to load the phone with playable music.

Let's wait and see on this one.

UPDATE: Week-end is over...no new firmware...Snif...

Google Mobile Redesigned for the iPhone

Google_iphone

Google unveiled an iPhone friendly version of the search engine. The new page gives you an easier access to the search box and the search results are easier to use. A navigation bar has also been added at the top of the page, and it has direct links to Gmail, Calendar, Reader and More (Docs, SMS, GOOG-411, News, Photos, Blogger and Notebook).

It looks like Google is jumping on the iPhone bandwagon big time. I can't wait to see if they are going to use the Apple SDK, and design applications for the iPhone?

Seriously though, an iPhone optimized Google search engine will make the iPhone browser even more attractive than it is already. Google's recent move could be called win-win-win situation: Google will get more traffic from a mobile device, the iPhone will become even more user-friendly, and the end user will benefit from all this. Cool!

Only thing missing? A Google bookmark on the home page.

AnySIM goes open source

Ipodtouchiphonejailbreak

In the continuing saga of Apple firmware updates for the iPhone versus free ranging programmers developing ways to unlock the phone, a new chapter looks to be opening up. The iPhone Dev Team, responsible for the free iPhone unlocking solution known as AnySIM, has decided to make the offering open source in an attempt to keep up with Apple and also keep the code clean.

Gizmodo has a solid break down of what has been happening. An earlier report details an interview with one of the team members in which it was revealed most of the "core members of the team" were ok with putting AnySIM into an open source model. The hope by doing this was to create legitimate development versions of the application and not hacked together pieces based upon "rip offs" of the original code.

AnySIM, after a poll was conducted, is now moving into an open source model. Again, citing Gizmodo, the plan is to release the code under the General Public License. This seems to be a smart move on the part of the iPhone Dev Team to do this so as to keep potentially bad, modified versions of their work from creeping around the Internet. Expect the open source AnySIM this Friday.

SAP Goes iPhone

Iphone_sap SAP announced that they couldn't resist to the iPhone frenzy, and decided to join the fun with the release of an iPhone program.  The software is part of a new sales-force automation software that it is launching this month.

The first generation will load business contacts, information on sales prospects and account data onto the iPhone. But don't get too excited here, this is still a web based interface.

Is this going to help the iPhone gaining business people acceptance? That alone, probably not, but with the third party SDK promised for next February, my guess is we are going to see many other business tool developers aiming for the same goal: Using the iPhone hype to reach new customers.

SAP is introducing an iPhone compatible software before the release of a Blackberry, Treo or Windows Mobile versions. The software giant decided to introduce the iPhone software ahead of programs for those devices at the request of its salespeople, saying they prefer using iPhones to the other devices.

Here's an interesting quote from SAP:

"The iPhone has become such a popular thing," said Bob Stutz, a SAP senior vice president who is responsible for developing the company's customer relationship management software. "Everybody wants the ease of use of the iPhone."

The ease of use? You bet, that is probably what makes the iPhone so appealing to people (besides that people just love the icons...). After just a few minutes, people are having fun with the device. Have you ever watched someone trying to use a Blackberry for the first time? It's a show.

Germany: T-Mobile can Sell Locked iPhones

Tmobile_iphone_germany_2

T-Mobile - Germany wins its legal battle against Vodafone over sales conditions for the iPhone, which T-Mobile sells exclusively in Germany.

A German court decided in favour of T-Mobile and said that T-Mobile can sell the iPhone with a locked SIM card.

T-Mobile said it planned to return to its original sales conditions for the phone as soon as possible.

France will then be the only country where the iPhone can legally be bought unlocked.

iPhone Safari Brower Already more Popular than Windows Mobile

Iphonebrowser Even Steve Jobs is probably surprised by this one. According to the quarterly browser marketshare report, just released by Net Applications, the iPhone already holds a significant marketshare.

The report reveals that the iPhone now has 0.09% of the browser market. That's not a lot you would say? It may look like it at first, but when you compare this number with Windows Mobile's marketshare of 0.06%, you now see that the iPhone Safari browser is a killer app. Windows Mobile has been on the market for 10 years and according to Gardner, 3 million Windows Mobile enabled phones have been shipped in Q1 2007.

But let's be honest here, the iPhone browser is really fun to use. Period. Sometimes, even though I'm just a few feet away from my laptop, I'll use the iPhone browser for a quick look at something on the web.  I would have never done this with any other mobile phone.  And you?

I do have a growing complain though…Give us Flash support on the  iPhone browser.  To keep grabbing market shares, the iPhone absolutely needs Flash., and I need it too!

Check the stats after the jump.

Extend iPhone battery life courtesy of mStation

MophiejuicepackExtra long battery life is something one always strives for when it comes to portable devices like the iPhone. mStation is therefore targeting iPhone owners today with a new extended life battery pack called the mophie juice pack. It is priced at around $100 and should be out by mid-December.

mStation's mophie juice pack slides onto the back of the iPhone and connects to the mobile's dock connector. While attached it greatly extends the battery life of the iPhone, offering an additional 250 hours of stand by time, eight hours of talk time, six hours of Internet surfing, seven hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback. It also doubles as a case for your phone, complete with comfort grip and non-slip finish.

The mophie juice pack has a four LED "charge status" indicator on the back and can be recharged itself with standard iPhone accessories such as the cable included with the phone. Battery technology within the juice pack, according to mStation, is designed to have the iPhone fully drain the pack's battery first before moving on to use the phone's internal one.
