Possible 10-Day Interlude Between 3G iPhone Keynote and Launch

Tech blog infoSync World is reporting an interesting tidbit to the 3G rumor mill.  At a launch event for another carrier’s new phone, someone let it slip that the 3G iPhone will be released to the public 10 days after Steve dons his turtle neck in San Francisco.  The given date of the announcement has been June 9th for quite some time, but many assumed that the iPhone might be available on the same day.  This would match some previous product launches (all accounts indicate Apple prefers this), but if last year’s long pause between iPhone announcement and launch is any indication, something always takes more time than they would like.  I suspect that the partnership between Apple and AT&T has something to do with it.

To me this makes a lot of sense.  First of all, as infoSync World points out, the memo to AT&T wireless employees specifically says vacations should be avoided after June 15th.  June 18th (the suspected release date) is three days later, more than enough time to train the sales team for launch.  This also explains why the extra summer hiring begins on the 16th.  Here’s a little timeline to help keep it all straight:

  • June 9th - WWDC Keynote by Steve Jobs - Announces 3G iPhone and other Apple news
  • June 15th - Employees at AT&T advised not to miss work for a while (begin iPhone training)
  • June 16th - Temporary employees begin training for less complex crowd control (give the regular sales team a day’s head start
  • June 18th - Stores open their doors for a flood of multi-touching maniacs

Now of course this is all officially speculation, but as we draw nearer to the event the rumors always tend to ring truer and require less logical leaps.  Stay posted with iPhoneFreak as we learn more.

[…] First off, TUAW has shored up their positions about a couple of new rumors. They believe, based on the information they have recieved, that the new iPhone firmware will not be released at WWDC, but instead a week or two afterward. The reason for this is that many of the wireless carriers Apple has been dealing with over the past few months are demanding a “first look” at the firmware before it goes out to consumers. This means the iPhone hardware would not be launched directly at that event either, a conclusion that is supported by my previous timeline of AT&T work schedules. […]
