Enterprise iPhone… Early IT Embrace?

iPhone News

We may be a small, albeit growing corner of the iPhone arena, but keeping it real still feels good. And if it sounds like I’m bias, or B.S., I’ve been banging on iPhones for a year now, as a user & developer, and watching the posts today was entertaining.

Let’s not all get too enamored. I’m quickly reading all kinds of warnings about the “zippy new phone” today…. let’s remember that “Apple has failed to address reliability issues with the iPhone hardware, including battery problems, and the built-in software lacks the reliability, management and security software features that could make it easier for enterprises to manage the device, analysts said”.

“Failure” comes to mind?

Folks are pretending to have an angle, or an idea, saying things like “A number of hardware problems could also make iPhones unreliable, analysts said. If a model goes bad and the battery fails, users will have to mail in the device and perhaps wait a week for a replacement.” This comment likely came from someone who has a “department” to keep their desktop machines running productively.

Of course, and I’m sure this is already happening… IT pros will enjoy grabbing a replacement needed for a network member, update and sync the device from their desktop, impress company principals (who’ve been requesting the device for personal use for a year) and enjoy a legitimate reason to hang out in iTunes while doing their job.

Am I Wrong?

Apple is stepping out, for sure…. completely challenging corporate IT, global 3G, actual developer integration… for starters. Yet they still seem comfortable with the amazing stature of their product. Apple is back with a significantly enhanced mobile device, and a rapidly growing platform they’ve created… inviting everyone to have great fun, and be mavericks.

More laughs from today’s RSS feeds… “For Apple to survive it will have to go up against the dominant BlackBerry and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platforms”. Clearly delusional… proposing “survival”, as a question for the iPhone.

With this device, a bunch of new toys, a much lower price point, and still the best UI available… it’s still, by far, the tastiest Kool-Aid around. I had to just volley with the downers here a bit… but it’s cool… Apple is the new kid on the block… it must be annoying. Hey, who knows… Microsoft could come out with a unique, ground-breaking device, after 5 or 10 years in the industry… and show everyone “what the mobile user wants!”.

…after 5… or 10… years in the industry.

I believe Apple has made a bold move, especially for them, into corporate markets… and looking a little more commercial-ish than usual yesterday. So… “watch out”.
