I think everyone feels a little bit silly right now. TUAW just pointed out that the original iPhone press release from Apple specifically states that the iPhone 2.0 firmware would be available on July 11th, right along side of the 3G iPhone launch.
Here’s the quote from the press release (paragraph 8):
“iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes® 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers.”
I for one am a bit surprised that the software and hardware dates will match up exactly. Apple isn’t always good at launching multiple new things at once and I wholely expected some kind of delay (or an earlier release) of the new firmware for current iPhone users. Even so, it is good to know that only 11 days remain until free Apps can begin pouring into the new and old models alike.
If you haven’t been paying attention, this new firmware will offer business or “enterprise” add-ons, access to the App Store, some usability updates, and integration with the new MobileMe service.
