It was long rumored that the iPhone (3G) would be accompanied by a firmware update, alas, here it is, 2.0. The new firmware contains pretty much everything that it was rumored to (1,2) and then some.”We think the iPhone 2.0 software will be phenomenal and raise use to a whole new level. We’ll release it in early July,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
Included in the 2.0 firmware update (in no particular order):
- Contact Search (the ability to search through your contacts)
- iWork Document Support (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote)
- Bulk Delete/Move (Email)
- 3G Capabilities
- Scientific Calculator (Tilt iPhone while in the Calculator App)
- Parental Controls (Enable/Disable Explicit Songs, Safari, YouTube, App Store, and iTunes)
- Ability to Save Images onto your iPhone’s HD
- Language Support for Japanese/Chinese
- The Application Store (App Store) (for downloading 3rd party apps)
- 3rd Party Application Support (Ties in with the App Store)
- GPS Enabled (GPS-A)
- Microsoft Exchange Support (push email, calendars, contacts, auto-discovery, global address lookup, remote wipe)
- MobileMe Integration
According to Steve Jobs, “It [2.0 firmware update] will be a free software update for all iPhone owners, and the price is down to $9.95 for iPod touch owners.”
Well, that’s about it for now, if I left anything off that list, feel free to leave a comment, and I will make the necessary changes.
