Mexican iPhone 3G carrier Telcel announces pricing plans

As Mexico happens to be in that first wave of iPhone 3G launches, it comes as little surprise that their pricing plans have recently surfaced, and in comparison to some they are not looking all that bad.

The 8GB iPhone will be available for as low as free up to MXN $3,199 (around $310.50 US) and the 16GB iPhone will be priced beginning at MXN $1,259 (around $122.20 US) up to MXN $4,459 (around $432.80 US). These prices, of course at least compared to the pricing here in the US and Canada are a little higher at the top end, but the option for free 8GB model, or a $122 16GB model sounds pretty good to me.

The plans on the other hand range from a low 100MB of data transfer per month up to an unlimited data transfer option. There are reported to be four plans available which range in price from $36 US up to $79 US. These plans offer a range of anywhere from 200 up to 700 voice minutes per month. In a nice plus and unlike the US based AT&T plans they are also including text messages with an option as low as 100 and up to 250 per month depending on the plan you choose.

Just a fair bit of warning, we would suggest looking carefully at your required monthly data transfer needs because the overages, as you may expect are not that cheap. They are coming in at runs 5 centavos per KB, which means that you are going to be paying around $4.86 US for every MB. Ouch!

While the plans are okay, the part that hurts is the $310.50 US; which is NOT $199 US. Telcel’s data rates are also high. None of this is really surprising as cellular rates in Mexico have usually had the objective of bilking the customer quickly instead of milking him slowly.

Just went this morning to renew my Telcel contract in Tijuana with a 16GB iphone, they tried to rip me, asault me, etc telling me that I have two pay more than $500US dollars to get this kind of phone with a monthly fee of around $130US dollars…man I have been their customer for more than 12 years!!! The weird thing is that if I sign a New contract I only have to pay $250.00 for the phone…very bad for their old customers…and In Mexico you can not keep your old number…screw Telcel!!!!

i just signed up with telcel in cabo san lucas. i had an unlocked 1st gen iphone and was using prepaid phone cards. this was okay as long as you don’t want internet. i, however, wanted internet, so i signed a two year contract and got an 8gb 3g for free. the monthly plan with 200 minutes and unlimited internet access is only 790 pesos about 60 dollars u.s. i also get favorite 5, five friends first 5 minutes free, plus i got to keep my old number. and thanks to redsn0w it’s unlocked and jailbroken. not a bad deal. the only down side is the text messaging, the plan includes (10) ten. that sucks
