AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has distributed an internal FAQ to their sales staff in order to prepare them for 3G iPhone launch day. While there are not a great number of details about the launch in the internal memo, it does have some interesting questions with answers.
The first big point the document makes is that no waitlists or holds may be put into effect for the new phone. Specificially, it says, “It is critical that all stores follow the same process to ensure every customer has an equal and fair opportunity to purchase a phone.” This is pretty standard corporate policy, though reports of AT&T stores creating wait-lists have been tricking in.
Another point is that Apple sales staff are to say “I KNOW NOTHING” (well not quite like that) when asked about iPhone upgrades (from the first-gen iPhone). Apple either hasn’t decided if they want to do upgrades and upgrade pricing in their stores, or they simply want to leave all of that to the AT&T stores.
This tactic is also taken when customers grill Apple employees on the strange pricing between the 3G iPhone and the iPod Touch. They are instructed to point out that the iPod Touch is free of a two-year service agreement and therefore may be a better deal for some customers. Also, “I KNOW NOTHING” applies again when asked if the iPod Touch’s price will be adjusted soon. Such a narrow line Apple sales people must walk!
Some little things are also cleared up by the FAQ. Business buyers may buy several phones for their company and if they are using the consumer rate plan, they can set up in an Apple store. If they are going to use the more expensive “business” plan, they will have to go to an AT&T store. This is fairly reasonable, as the corporate set-up will probably be more complex and we all know how much Apple hates complexity in its stores. Finally, any complex questions about coverage or rate plans (especially international rates) are to be directed at AT&T.
Apple will apparently be holding a series of meetings for its stores on July 6th as a final prep for the upcoming launch.

I spoke with a manager at an AT&T store today and he said that they are having a meeting this Saturday to go over some of the iPhone stuff. He told me to call him at noon on Saturday and he will let me know if there is any new info. I will come back here with details (if any).
