The 3G iPhone; What is in the box and what’s not

While the new lower price of the phone is welcomed its not really going to be as cheap as just plunking down your $199 or $299. Some have already made the argument that the 3G service is going to be $30 instead of the current $20, which over the course of a 2-year agreement will set you back an additional $240.

However the included accessories are not quite the same as the original iPhone. With that there are some good points, some bad points and one that seems just a little odd.

To begin with, the most frustrating, the iPhone 3G does not ship with a USB dock, and it also does not appear to have a dock adapter of any sort listed either. Which means that current iPhone users, or those with the Apple Bluetooth headset and dock will have to either go without a dock or spend a few extra bucks to grab a new one. The current price of the Apple Universal Dock is $49, which means that if you prefer a dock (personally I do) the new cost of the phone is more like $248 or $348.

Next up we have the good point, which, at least based on the image from the Apple Store website, the USB power adapter seems to be quite a bit smaller than the original iPhone power brick. Hopefully the pictured adapter is close to being accurate in size. After all a smaller power adapter is much nicer when it comes time to pack your travel bag, that is assuming you are not bad at losing small items.

Finally, we have the odd item, included in the box is also a “SIM ejector tool.” Which I am hoping is more than the paperclip that we first saw come to light a while back.

Otherwise the iPhone 3G still comes packaged with a stereo headset with mic, dock connector to USB cable, documentation and cleaning cloth.
