Will AT&T’s 3G Network Crack Under the Weight of the iPhone?

There are some doubts about AT&T’s new updates to the 3G network being able to withstand the data-sucking force that will be the new 3G-enabled iPhone. iPhone users are reported to use twice as much bandwidth as regular smartphone users, and now they will be able to do so in almost any heavily populated area. My home, for instance, has next to no signal at all, but my entire city (Richmond) has an enormous blanket of 3G coverage. By creating more availability, they will also likely increase use.

How much faster will it be? Estimates are that 3G is 10 times faster than EDGE. That being said, will users opt not to switch to (sometimes) more complex WiFi connections and opt to just stay on 3G? Also, will people use even more data-heavy features like streaming video and over-the-air downloading? Probably. GigaOM discusses this in more depth.

Maybe Steve will mention something at the keynote. I’d bet money that AT&T will have at least one executive representing them on stage anyway.
