3G iPhone Packaging Will Be Green!

3G iPhone Packaging Will Be Green!

In a continuation of Steve Jobs’ effort to reduce Apple’s impact on the environment, Apple has enlisted the aid of Dutch company PaperFoam in “greening” their packaging materials.  The tech company has ordered “millions of PaperFoam packages,” according to PaperFoam CEO Hans Arentsen [via the Dutch blog Bright].

PaperFoam, founded in 1998, uses potato starch or tapioca in an injection molding process that reduces the carbon footprint of their products by 90 percent (presumably compared to traditional packaging).

The specific packaging for Apple will consist of a starch tray enclosed in a coated cardboard box.  Both of these components are recyclable.

For more information about Apple’s green initiative, here is an open letter from Steve Jobs where he outlines Apple’s plans for the future.  Of course there is no hint of self-criticism or “we can go better” spirit, but it’s clear they are thinking about it.
