Say is isn’t so, it already seems strange that we are still seeing long very long lines at Apple Stores on a daily basis, but the simple fact is that is seems like the demand has been higher than the supply.
Based on analysis from Gene Munster at Piper Jaffray these short supply issues could last “for another two to four weeks.”
“Early demand has been more than they expected [because] they knocked it out of the park on the first weekend.”
There is however a little bit of hope for those still looking, Macworld is reporting that 27% of Apple Stores have at least some models in stock. Of course, it may not be the model you were hoping for because only 13 of the 188 stores have all three models available.
It seems that the black 16GB model was the most in demand as they are nearly unavailable, with the white 16GB model still available in 46 locations.
The situation at AT&T is not any better, in fact it seems to be a little worse with reports of most of the 1,200 locations being out of stock.
A word of advice, if you are still looking don’t forget about the online availability tool from Apple.

My friend wasn’t able to stand in line on launch day and he has been all around San Antonio trying to find a black 16GB. He is on every waiting list and has already pre-ordered and paid for one at an apple store. They told him they were unsure when they were going to get it in and it might be a few weeks. Yikes!

I did some analysis of the data from Apple’s availability tool:

It reveals more than Apple makes it sound like…

After going through the continuous hassle of hitting store after store only to continually be told they are out, I got fed up and just decided to order one from the AT&T store. I ordered/paid on Friday, got an email that it had overnighted on Saturday and the phone will be in store on Monday. Much preferable to driving all over. I only wish I had thought of it a week earlier.

My friend did that, but he said that he is really far down on the list and is still waiting. Its been over a week now.
