Apple has gone ahead and released iTunes version 7.7 which brings with it, the App Store. Steve Jobs, in speaking with the USA Today mentioned that the App Store would have “more than 500″ applications available and that about 25% of those would be free. He was also quoted as saying that “this is the biggest launch of my career.”
Based on his statements there was also some further research as to what was actually included in the App Store for its initial launch. The study was done by Pinch Media, a company that states they are “dedicated to helping iPhone developers establish and grow their businesses.”
Here is what they found in their initial application counting (the graph is pictured below);
“On AppStore launch, Pinch Media counted 552 applications - 417 of them paid, 135 of them free. Paid applications ranged in price from $0.99 to $69.99, with the most common price points being $0.99 (85 applications), $9.99 (82 applications), and $4.99 (62 applications). We’ve put together a bar graph of iPhone application price distribution, below.”
Also, just in case you load up iTunes version 7.7 and do not see the “Applications” section off to the left hand side in along with your Music, Movies and other sections you may need to change your preferences to let it show.
If that is needed, open the iTunes preference and under the “General” section just check the box next to Applications under “Show.” For some reason, some (mine included) are not showing by default. Either way its an easy fix.
In the meantime, at least for everyone who has not jailbroken their iPhone in the past, enjoy the third party apps, I know I have been.
