As Gizmodo put it, the “iPocalypse” is upon us. While many people have been able to buy the new 3G iPhone, activating it has been a different matter. Releasing the new iPhone firmware to old users and activating every new phone on the same day was a really bad move on Apple’s part. I knew this was going to happen…I just wish I’d written it down somewhere so I’d have proof.
For those who aren’t embroiled in it, here’s the news. Apple and AT&T stores are melting down at the moment because the servers that allow the iPhones to be activated are universally down. The only “fix” out there right now is to leave the device attached for 10-15 minutes and try updating again. This means that the already long wait times for activation are now being extended. Also it looks like this fix really isn’t working anymore, so generally the new devices are $200-$300 bricks.
First gen users who are trying to get the new firmware are also having trouble. Personally, I was able to get the new firmware downloaded and installed this morning. It was a big file, but it seemed to chug along pretty swiftly. The servers for activation seem to be completely out though. When I plug in my phone I get an error asking me to “check my connection.” Of course I’m blogging right now so my connection is fine. Apple’s connection is a different story.
Of course the server outage can’t last forever. Eventually the requests will let up as less dedicated users (or users with jobs) give up and hope they can get on later. Good luck!
If you have any success or failure, let us know in the comments!

Update: I just got the update verified and activated about a half an hour ago. It was a very, very long process, but it made it all the way through. Give it another go and let us know your status.

I have major failure. I have been trying to activate my new account through iTunes for about 4 and a half hours and i get the same error message. On the AT&T support forums, they are talking about sim cards being a problem. Does anybody know about this? My sim is new because it came with the phone.

One more thing, i switched my service over to AT&T to get the iPhone and so my old phone is down now. I am currently with out any cell phone service. What did we do before these things?

I don’t think it’s SIM related. I think it is “Apple’s servers have blown up” related.

Yeah, i figure as much. Either way, they really should have expected such a high volume of traffic. I am disappointed in Apple.

Gee – what a shocker – Apple can’t handle the overload of both new clients and upgrading clients. I bought my first generation iPhone the weekend it came out and it took 17 hours to activate. Why do you think I’m holding off on upgrading to the new one for a couple of weeks??? Having a faster internet connection isn’t as important to me as having a CELL PHONE THAT WORKS!!! DUH!! You would think all of these “smart” computer geeks would start to catch on – nothing in the technology world ever works the first time!!! Hence why there is something called “Version 2.0″

I have been unable to get on the iTunes store for a week. It says my network connection timed out. They tell me they are working on the problem 24 hours a day to resolve the problem. In light of today’s catastrophe it may be awhile before the focus back on this issue.
Anyone else getting this error message prior to today?

I tried to upgrade my old iPhone this morning and iTunes simply wouldn’t recognize the upgrade. It first said, there is new version 2.0 available. Do you want to download and install. I tried that option and then it went back to the main page. Now it says your version 1.1.4 is the latest and will be checked again on 07/18/2008. Weird… I personally think Apple should have expected this with iPhone 1.0 experience.

FYI, I just got my iPhone upgraded to 2.0. Woot woot!

I had fits trying to update this morning, but all is well now. 2.0 is cool! Peace, Ritz.

what a bunch of cry babies. i download the firmware and was able to update it at 3pm eastern time u.s. i love the update. like the blog said, apple didn’t think it through when they choose to release the update 2.0 and for new customers which caused the server to be down, but only for a couple of hours. also in respond to the 17hrs 1st gen. iphone activation, i bought the iphone the day it came out and it took me less than an hour to activate. may be you need to upgrade your aol to some types of broadband. LOVE MY NEW 2.0 UPDATE AND APP.

Took a while, and a whole lotta failure, but my old iPhone finally took the update. So now I can play Pong.
Mobile Me isn’t anywhere near working yet, tho’.

Started trying to get the update at 8am Friday morning. Took a solid 8 hours of effort logging in and out if iTunes before finally having success. I was updating an iPhone classic & the update wiped out all my contact photos. Once the pain was over everything seems to be running fine!

I was downloading apps yesterday with my new iphone 3g, and when i was messing with the programs, all of a sudden it says Enter passcode, and I cant even get into my phone now, because i never set a passcode for it. I restored my phone on itunes multiple times, and it fixed the problem only for a few minutes, and back to the “enter passcode” it went. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas to get this fixed? thanks
