Perhaps in an effort to calm the frustrated (potential) customers AT&T has released an official “customer update” to let everyone know that they are simply out of stock.
“We’ve seen incredible demand for iPhone 3G since it launched — and subsequently sold out — on July 11.”
Of course, they are also quick to remind those same potential customers that it is possible to order the iPhone 3G and pick it up at a future time through the direct fulfillment order process.
Customers who make their purchase using this process will then just sit back and wait for the notification that their very own iPhone 3G has arrived, which currently is taking about two weeks.
The direct fulfillment order are handled on a first-come first-served basis, however it was noted that the delivery time may vary depending on which model iPhone you choose.
AT&T also mentioned that those customers will be given first priority, meaning the stores are not going to see a re-stocking anytime soon, that is unless Apple sends them a really big shipment.
It seems that if you are still on the lookout for an iPhone 3G this may be your quickest and most likely the easiest way to get your hands on one.

AT&T is telling people 10 to 20 days for delivery… but I had mine in TWO DAYS. Way to underpromise and over-deliver. I actually got a FedEx tracking number the same day I ordered it (10:30 AM purchase, had the number by 8 PM).
It did take about two hours to fully activate over the air, their servers are getting hammered it seems. But delivery (white, 16 GB) was not an issue.
