iPhone 2.0 firmware: future printer connectivity?

iPhone 2.0 firmware: future printer connectivity?

3rd party iPhone developers have recently “decrypted” the iPhone’s newly released 2.0 firmware, and have found what appears to be an empty directory simply named “Printers.”

While this finding is by no means hard evidence, it does lead us to believe that Apple might just be cooking up something for us, in terms of wireless iPhone/iPod Touch printer connectivity.

Not many mobile devices that I know of can print directly to a printer, as a matter of fact, many mobile devices on the market today can barely keep up with the iPhone as it is. If and when the iPhone gets wireless printing capabilities, I believe it will quickly soar to the top of the smartphone market.

On a totally unrelated note, also found in the 2.0 firmware system files is a list of what appears to be supported bluetooth headsets:

  • Parrot CK3100
  • SouthWing SH310
  • Samsung WEP170
  • Motorola T305
  • Motorola S705
  • Motorola HS850
  • Motorola H500
  • Samsung WEP200
  • Plantronics 320
  • Plantronics 640
  • Plantronics Voyager 510
  • Jabra BT250v
  • Jawbone

At the company I work for, we just had a meeting today to discuss the possibility of using iPhone bluetooth to print wirelessly. We learned that so far, iPhone does not support wireless printing, and therefore, decided against using the iPhone for all our field techs nation wide.

I hope they change this soon!
