It looks like we are going to soon be given a few more options for activating and unlocking the iPhone running firmware 2.0. The iPhone-dev team has just posted some very encouraging comments with a promise to offer PwnageTool 2.0 soon.
“Happy Birthday guys! Very Very soon we will have for you a downloadable birthday present for you, so hold on tight!”
Once they release the new version they have stated that it will offer the ability to support;
- iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
- iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
- iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).
So it looks like, at least for now the iPhone 3G is going to remain locked with their current carriers, which means that at least for us here in the US, its just AT&T.
I am still very interested to see just how big the jailbreak scene gets now that the official App Store is available. I have heard from passionate people on both sides of the fence. Some unpatiently waiting for the ability and some who think that jailbreaking is senseless now.
Personally, I had a jailbroken phone and loved it, now I have the App Store and love it, so based on that why would I not want a phone that could do both? That just means twice as much love.

I agree that jailbreaking is going to be a lot less common, but there are still some awesome apps out there that aren’t in the app store including roms and what not.
