MobileMe problems Admitted

Apple’s has begun posting status reports on the MobileMe network on it’s web site. and the posts reveal system problems and lost e-mail, although the actual number of lost messages involves only 1/10th of the 1% of users affected by the mishaps.

  • Last Friday, 1% of MobileMe subscribers were affected by a “serious problem” with one of Apple’s mail servers
  • Limited web access has been restored to those accounts but full access won’t be sorted until next week
  • For accounts affected, Apple admits to losing “approximately 10%” of the messages received between July 16 and July 18

Apple has added server capacity to the MobileMe system, and engineers have been making software tweaks to help the system scale better. It has been reported Apple has fixed over 70 system bugs to date. The site says: Updated: July 26, 2008, 6 p.m. PDT. On Friday, July 18, 2008 (2008-07-18) we experienced a serious issue with one of our mail servers which affected approximately 1% of our members. Since the failure, affected members have been unable to receive email at me.com or access MobileMe Mail accounts using desktop mail applications, iPhone, or iPod touch. We understand this is a serious issue and apologize for this service interruption. We are working hard to restore your service.

Resolution

As a first step toward restoring service, we restored web access to a portion of your MobileMe Mail account at 10:00 p.m. PDT, July 25. You can now log into me.com, and use the Mail web application to access all the messages you have received since the July 18 service outage. You can also compose, send, and receive new messages as normal. Please note that this interim solution does not provide access to any email messages received or saved before the outage began on July 18. IMPORTANT: To avoid possible technical errors, please do not do any of the following until your email service is completely restored:

  • Change your MobileMe password
  • Create or change any MobileMe email aliases
  • Change your MobileMe storage allocation

We imagine if only 1/10th of 1% of Windows Vista users were experiencing problems, Microsoft would be throwing a party. But, for Apple, who has a customer based who demands more, it’s a big problem.
