Apple’s has allowed some developers a glance at a a beta version of firmware 2.1 which the rumor mill reports may have some new GPS features: as in possibly turn-by-turn directions. Speculation is that the new firmware will include Core Location hooks for keeping track of both direction and speed. Of course the current firmware already knows where you are, and much more precisely than the old 1.0 version, which in rural areas could be off by a mile or more.
Will copy and paste show up in 2.1? Maybe/maybe not. The rumor, reported by Engadget , is that in the new version of the WebKit framework there is a list of commands for “plugins,” “copy,” “paste,” “cut.” Of course just because it’s listed in the spec’s doesn’t mean it’s actually there. We’ve seen that before.
Finally making it into in the 2.1 beta code according to sources, is Apple’s much-hyped push notification service. As you recall Apple stopped referring to “push” after reviewers complained that what they were doing with the current software isn’t the real thing.
But since it’s in developers hands now, come September you should be able to load new firmware which will provide better battery life without sacrificing performance.
