Some recent speculation makes it look like those in Hong Kong may have a hard time snagging an iPhone 3G on the initial launch day. As of now, this is still just a rumor and is based on a tip that was sent in from a reader of the iPhone blog.
According to the report, anyone in Hong Kong that has any hope to get an iPhone 3G will have to register on 3’s website and then hope that they are “one of the random 500 lucky ones selected.”
Based on the tipsters report, the Hong Kong carrier 3 will have just 500 iPhones available and they will be given out to those who have their names chosen. The drawing of names will take place on July 8, and those lucky 500 will then be notified that they can purchase the iPhone 3G when it is available on July 11.
3 has also not made any mention of just when more iPhones will come available in the future.
Assuming this is true, it sounds pretty sad. Especially considering that my only real concern here in the US was whether I should head to my small town AT&T and hopefully avoid the long lines or make the 45 minute drive to an Apple Store to enjoy the atmosphere.
