Swiss 3G retailers: sold out

Many European iPhone 3G retailers sold out their entire 3G inventory even before retailers in the United States had even opened shop. Not only did this immense tidal wave of 3G purchases surge through retail stores, it also did a number on Apple’s iPhone 3G activation servers, causing them to fail (to a certain extent.)

Swisscom’s main Bern retail store in the Christoffel shopping center opened its doors at 8 a.m. and had already sold all 3,000 of its stocked 16GB 3Gs by 2 p.m. In addition to the Christoffel Swisscom store, over 12 other Swisscom stores throughout the Bern area had also exhausted their 3G stock by around roughly the same time.

Swisscom’s retail stores were not the only stores to run out of 3Gs in Bern; Mobilezone, Data Quest, and the Globus department store all experienced 3G shortages, managing to exhaust their entire 3G stock by early afternoon.

I was the 35th person in line at San Antonio’s biggest AT&T store, and they only had two black 16GB iPhones left. Very sad for the rest of the 150+ people waiting in line behind me.
