Today, with the launch of the iPhone, Apple released the “Remote” App for free. What is it and why did Apple make it?
Have you ever had a “remote control watch?” You know what I mean, a watch that lets you change the channels of your TV. Well if you have, you are a complete dork, but you are not alone. I never went out and bought one, but I think I secretly thought it would be cool to have one. Later, you might have thought, “Why can’t my phone control everything in my house?” You carry it with you all the time, right?
Well, Apple has realized your deep-seated desire to be a wristwatch cowboy and created Remote. It works as an App on your iPhone or iPod Touch and it utilizes your Wifi network. After creating a passcode to link your home computer with the device, you can actively view and control the media being played by iTunes. The interface is exactly the same as the regular iPod on the iPhone, but it lets you browse your entire iTunes library remotely.
It also works with the Apple TV and AirTunes. The sync up (I’m assuming) works the same way and you can play, pause, and skip through media on your home network.
Unfortunately I will have to wait until the firmware gets pushed to try it tomorrow (an iPhone blogger shouldn’t risk bricking their only iPhone with dodgy firmware), but I encourage you to try it out. It may not strap to your wrist, but that’s nothing a big Velcro iPhone case can’t fix.
