An unexpected surprise came yesterday afternoon from Apple and AT&T in the form a text message that was urging users to update to the latest firmware.
The message was simple and to the point and some believe it was prompted by comments from MSNBC writer Suzanne Choney who urged Apple and AT&T to tell users about the update because “when you have more than 1 million people to whom the information needs to get to, worth-of-mouth doesn’t cut it.”
For those that have not received the message, that would most likely mean that you are one of the ‘good” ones and have already updated, however the message simply read;
“An important software update for iPhone 3G has been available on iTunes since this past Monday,” the message reads. “To get it, simply sync your iPhone 3G with iTunes and click the ‘Check for Update’ button.”
While I am sure this would be a helpful message for plenty of non-geeky iPhone users, I will remain with my current (and stable for me) firmware 2.0.1 for my own personal reasons. Namely, I cannot easily re-jailbreak firmware 2.0.2 using a Mac just yet and would hate to lose my third party apps. I wonder how many more messages I will end up receiving.

The message was sent to 2.0.2 users as well, which makes sense when you think about it. Apple is probably tracking which Apple IDs have which versions, but they’re clearly not sharing that information with AT&T.

I too received this message yesterday. I already knew about the update but I’m waiting for the 2.0.3 Pwnage to be released so I can remain jailbroken.

I got the message and had updated the previous night but did not sync after it completed so maybe that is why.
