While there are plenty of people who look at the iPhone and see a phone, or an iPod, or even “the internet in your pocket” the release of the App Store and firmware 2.0 has transformed it into so much more. Notably a portable gaming machine.
During the recent QuakeCon 2008 event, id Software co-founder John Carmack offered up some high praise for the iPhone stating it was “more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined.”
Carmack also noted that he was disappointed that id Software had yet to ship a game title for the iPhone, but teased us in stating that they have two titles in the works. Of course I say teased because he did not mention just what those titles were and did mention that they were “tentative.” He did however give some vague details, which really just further added to the torment, stating that one game was more of a “conventional mobile game” while the other was something that would test the limits of the iPhone.
Of course, going back to his comment of high praise, Carmack did not intend it to mean that the iPhone is going to replace the DS or PSP as the portable game machine of choice, but he stated that he believes it will “lead to more people playing games on their phones than ever before.”
