Has AT&T been quietly extending their 3G coverage?

While I have still not found anything official coming from AT&T it seems that they may be expanding on their available 3G coverage areas. Going about my daily business yesterday I received a simple Twitter message that stated;

OMG!!!! I now have 3G at home!!! Sweet!

Now normally I would not be all that excited by that message, however this message came from another Twitter user who happens to live close to me, and yes I live in an area that is still considered “the boonies” by many people. I also did not expect to get an upgrade anytime soon.

Up until a few weeks ago, the 3G stopped about 15-20 miles south of the town I live in, and from the best I can tell this 3G coverage just began yesterday afternoon, and its still not reflected on the AT&T coverage map.

So if you are an iPhone 3G owner in an area without any 3G coverage, you may want to go ahead and flip the 3G setting back on for a quick test.

Who knows you may get a nice surprise like I did yesterday.

[thanks @Karagines for the tip]

    I know in the last couple of weeks we have gotten new 3G coverage in Mobile, AL and Pensacola, FL. Pensacola is on the 3G list, but Mobile is not. Strange.

    It’s about time. They need to get their act together and beef their network up.

    Without the iPhone or 3G capabilities I’d have left them a long time ago. Verizon seems to be the winner out here reception wise, and Sprint’s 3G is impressive. But Verizon has crap for phone choices (although slowly getting better) and I was anti-Sprint (although nowadays I’d rethink that)

    However, I just had to have an iPhone, so AT&T kept my business, but just barely. Some day soon I will actually finish my “iPhone Hell Day” post on my blog which details all the crap we had to go through to get our phones and all the misinformation given to us mainly by AT&T people…

    3G technology has been available for the past 5 years. AT&T seems to be dragging their feet for no apparent reason. The additional $10 upcharge they have imposed on iPhone users is without reason or merit!
