Infineon follow up, they are not to blame for reception issues

After plenty of reports and plenty of stories, Infineon has responded to the recent claims stating that they are not to blame for the recent iPhone 3G reception issues. The story first began when an analyst report claimed that the 3G chipsets in the iPhone 3G were released with “an immature chipset and radio protocol stack.” After that, the story spread like wild fire and many began talking about a possible firmware update to fix the issue.

Thankfully the supplier of the chipset, Infineon has found some time to defend themselves. In a recent interview with Business Week, spokesman Guenther Gaugler stated that they are not the cause of any issues, and quickly let us know that these same chipsets are also used in Samsung handsets and they (Infineon) “are not aware of such problems there.”

So this seems to put the blame right back into Apple’s court, however it should be noted that he did not blame Apple for the issue either. Of course, many are speculating now that the silence coming from Apple is an admission of guilt by itself.

Some sources are claiming that Apple “programmed the Infineon chip to demand a more powerful 3G signal than the iPhone really requires.” According to the Business Week story, this stronger signal would cause issues;

“…if too many people try to make a call or go on the Internet in a given area, some of the devices will decide there’s insufficient power and switch to the slower network—even if there is enough 3G bandwidth available”

Hopefully this can be resolved by a simple firmware update, of course there are those who are claiming it will take nothing short of a recall to fully correct this issue. I guess we (the users) will just have to wait for the official word to come from Apple, and deal with any issues as they come up until then.

    So I am a former AT&T employee and I will say this…. The 3g service sucks balls! Constantly switching from gsm edge to 3g drops call like no other. The network can’t handle it and bucks you right back to 2g and poof…your call is lost…. However I remember several samsung phones especially the 1st gen black jack being recalled for faulty 3g chipsets causing them to get no or little service with lots of droped calls. So I would say it is a combo of both if you ask me.
