iPhone 3G overheats, burns sleeping man’s leg
August 2, 2008 | Robert Nelson

Perhaps one of the stranger complaints with the iPhone 3G so far, we have already seen numerous reports of cracks appearing, but this seems to be the first with a phone getting hot enough to actually burn someone’s leg.
The user claims that he fell asleep for a few hours only to wake up in “extreme pain coming from my pocket.” It seems that while he was asleep the iPhone 3G became “extremely hot” and actually burned his leg. Of course it was not a severe burn, but described more “like a sunburn,” but still you would not think it should even get that hot.
From the images that were posted you can see what appears to be some melted plastic around the dock connector, and the red mark on his leg is pretty clear.
According to his reports, the phone was off and in his pocket, and he does not “think it was because it was pressed” but also noted that the phone was not jailbroken, the auto-lock was set to one minute, and the push email and 3G data were switched off.
Long story short, he called Apple Support and they will be replacing the phone. I know mine gets a little warm after some heavy or extended use, but certainly not hot enough to burn me. Has anyone else seen any similar issues?

He is going to get a new iphone and that is it? Has he healed ?
That I did not see anything mentioned about, but considering he mentioned it was more like a sunburn, I can only assume that he is recovered.
Why does the phone look blue?
Doesn’t look like a serious injury, but something that should be looked into on Apple’s part.
…and he shaves his legs??
i thought the shaved leg thing was funny… he is a true happy guy… doesn’t even plan to sue apple just wants his phone replaced… which is rare these days
He went on to state on the forum that the phone has a blue appearance because he was trying to highlight the plastic melt and used a spotlight to get the maximum amount of light.
As far as the shaved leg, he stated that he only shaved that part to highlight the burn, and the rest of his legs are still hairy.
Its always nice to see someone who is not sue happy, I was getting tired reading the forums comments from all those telling him to go to an attorney. Yes it sucks but this things happen sometimes with electronics, if every idiot sued because of minor things then we as consumers would end up paying in the long run because it would surely drive prices up.
Why would you shave an area that is burned? That would make it hurt more?
Agreed, the only thing I can imagine is that his legs are so hairy that you were only able to see the burn once shaved, but I would think that running anything other than lotion over a burn would just further irritate it.
If he “shaved” them, he must have done it a couple days prior to the picture because the hairs have grown back out. Either that, or he just used a trimmer. The second would have been smarter because it wouldn’t have hurt as much.
I also commend him on not pursuing legal actions; stuff happens!
Yes it is nice to see this guy taking the high road. Knowing it was the right thing and he gets a new iphone . Save the. “suein” for bigger more tragic stuff . Still I think they could afford a say $100 iTunes Card and thank him for being a nice guy about it. He is a real good guy.
The gift card would be nice, but being a spokesman for Nair would even be better!
