Despite some earlier reports, it looks like the iPhone 3G will not be landing in Russia this year. According to a recent report from Russian news site Vedomosti, the iPhone 3G will be available in Russia legally beginning next year. Now of course there are lots of holes in this story so far, namely there has not been any carriers that have announced plans, nor has an official carrier been announced.
So far the only carrier to confirm that they were in talks was Megafona, however as of now they have not signed any agreement with Apple. Similar to other areas, the iPhone 3G, once available will require a contact carrier agreement to be signed at the time of purchase.
Like I said, still lacking in details, but it looks like 2009 will be the year. As of now there are an estimated 470,000 unlocked original iPhone’s in use throughout Russia, which all-in-all is not a bad number considering the phone was never officially available for sale.
