Qik streaming video app now with iPhone 3G compatibility

Despite still not being able to officially enter the App Store due to some restrictions within the SDK, the team behind the video streaming application Qik have not stopped developing.

Just recently they had announced they were out of private beta, and were allowing anyone who wanted to test the service to go ahead and sign up, but until just recently that still required an iPhone running firmware version 1.1.4.

Well iPhone owners looking to test out Qik that have the newer firmware will be very happy as they have just additional support.

The application, now at version 0.3.02 offers support for firmware 2.0 on the original iPhone and also the iPhone 3G. Users with a jailbroken iPhone will be able to stream video live over either a 3G or a Wi-Fi network. In addition to the added firmware support, the new version also allows the user to make the stream private, mute the mic, hide the chat window and even send out a Twitter message on demand.

For those looking to begin using Qik, you must first jailbreak your iPhone, then once that is ready you can follow the instructions below (from the Qik Blog) and get set up to stream live.

1. If you have not already, you’ll need to sign up at http://qik.com/sign_up and receive an SMS from us to activate the application.
2. Launch Cydia.
3. Go to the “Sections” tab at the bottom and scroll down to “Multimedia.”
4. Under Multimedia, you will find Qik. Tap on it then select “Install” at the top right, then in the same spot tap “Confirm.”
5. Now you will see Qik get installed. You may hit the “Return to Cydia” button at the bottom or just quit Cydia when it is done installing.
6. You’ll now notice a “Qik” icon on your home screen – Go ahead and launch it.
7. As long as your initial signup SMS/text message is still in your inbox for the first launch, your account will be linked to your device.
8. Make sure you have 3G service or are on WiFi (edge is not sufficient enough to stream video) before you begin broadcasting.
9. Hit record and enjoy Qik!
