Select iPhone developers receive Push Notification API

If you can remember back to the WWDC coverage, we were told of a Push Notification Service that would allow users to maintain a constant connection without having to be always running the particular app.

The Push Notification Service would have a middleman of sorts and when information or data is available it would then let us (the iPhone) know by sending the data. This would allow for a push service and not require the apps be running all the time, which in theory should solve the ‘no background application’ issue and still allow us to keep some battery life.

While its unclear as to when this will make its way onto iPhones everywhere, reports have begun to come in that a select “handful” of developers have received the new iPhone Push Notification Service API to begin using and testing. Although unconfirmed, it is also expected to be coming with the firmware 2.1 update, but of course we are not sure when that will be.
