Updated my original (jailbroken & unlocked) iPhone to firmware 2.0.1, update went fine but its no longer jailbroken or unlocked

With Apple having just released the first firmware update for 2.0, there are plenty of questions as to just how well this update will work, or more importantly what will happen to those with a jailbroken or unlocked iPhone.

Most important, will it re-lock the device or keep it unlocked? Well I just installed the firmware 2.0.1 update using iTunes on my original iPhone, and I am happy to report that I did not brick my iPhone. However…

The phone is no longer jailbroken or unlocked, it is back to a regular locked iPhone that is simply running firmware 2.0.1. Basically I cannot use it with a non-AT&T SIM any longer and Cydia along with the apps I had installed have been removed.

I was running firmware 2.0 and the phone had been jailbroken and unlocked using Pwnage Tool 2.0.1.

While I cannot say for sure, I would imagine that the same results would come from anyone who would be updating a jailbroken iPhone 3G. If you are brave enough to test out your jailbroken iPhone 3G please leave some comments below letting us know how it went.

I’m not brave enough, so I’m gonna hold out and wait till Friday. Or Sunday, because the dev team always seems to release news and new stuff on Sundays

  2. Tyler Says:

I’ll be trying it now on my jailbroken iPhone 3g.

  3. Muctur Says:

    Tried updating and it bricked.

  4. Tyler Says:

Worked like a champ on my Jailbroken iPhone 3g.

  5. Tyler Says:

Clarification: worked like a champ on the iPhone 3g although my phone’s no longer jailbroken.

  6. GungFu Says:

i bet it disables netshare of anyone who bought and downloaded it. I can totally see AT&T Execs sending all their lawyer to Apple with a cease and desist letter.

  7. Apple][Guy Says:

Updated my 16GB 3g White (Jailbroken) to 2.0.1 Update worked fine, it just ended up not jailbroken.

  8. confused Says:

one question, so that means that you guys updated your phone while it was jailbroken and the update simply removed the jailbreak? in other words, before updating you didnt restore your phone to non jailbroken?

  9. Robert Nelson Says:

confused, Yes, I updated it as a jailbroken iPhone. The update went smooth, no issues, it just took away the jailbreak and updated it to the standard 2.0.1

gungfu, good question, I was able to get NetShare and should give it a try today.

  10. FJS Says:

mmm… good to hear it doesnt get bricked but i really like my new 3g with cydia, nes and winterboard and all that cool customization so i will wait for winpwn(dont have a mac) to come up with something.

  11. Michel Says:

I updated my 1st gen. iPhone from 2.0 to and it works like it always did.

Cydia is gone, but AY! what’s the problem. Didn’t use it anyway, becuase there was nothing there. I rather wait for Installer 4.0

So, updating the 1st gen iPhone works. Just connect it iTunes, let it sync all the way. After that hit “Update”. Then it shows a mad Steve Jobs cartoon (probably a gimmick from the Dev/Pwng team) , then the Apple logo and updating begins.

    Works like a charm!

  12. Michel Says:

In the first sentence above I mean “from 2.0 to 2.01″

  13. Michel Says:

BTW, mine runs on a non-AT&T card, but on KPN (Netherlands).

As I am in Western-Europe, we have no AT&T so it was unlocked for about a year now. And it still is!!!!!

  14. weisen Says:

Hey, so you seem to be one of a few unlucky people who did the update and ended up with a re-LOCKED phone. Can you say how you did the original unlocking? Pwnage tool, I assume, with what bootloader (if you know)?

Hopefully you’ll get a new Pwnagetool in the next day or so!

  15. Mike Rice Says:

For those who wonder why their jailbroken iPhone is back in jail after applying firmware updates…

Jail-breaking is done by replacing the Official Apple firmware, with a modified version.

A ‘Firmware Update’ does exactly that… replaces the current firmware, with the latest Official Apple firmware.

So of course its incarcerated again.

    hi

    i need serious help here

i am at present using an unlocked iphone..i did get the mobile with the AT&T card and full package from USA…when i got it the version was 1.0.2 …recently i updated it to 1.1.4….

this month i am going to USA for good..and i would like to use this iphone back there…how do i go about getting a connection there..i mean i have the sim of AT&T and the mobile is about a year old…..i really want to use this phone because i heard in the US the iphones are completely stock out…so i want to set up the connection and use this phone…

please do tell me directions on how to lock the phone back to AT&T or is another method advisable??

    somebody please help

  17. Driggs Says:

avi, why would you ask this in a comments section of a blog vs a forum?

If you want to use it with AT&T then just update to the new 2.0.1

It’ll set your phone to AT&T by default if the phone is an at&t phone originally. Easy as pie.

  18. Max Says:

Hey I have Iphone software version 1.1.4, and I live in New Zealand. My iPhone is jailbroken with a ton of my own app’s and ringtones and whatnot on it,

But I would like to upgrade my software to 2.1 and I was wondering if anyone knows what will happen to my phone exactly,

will it simply restore my phone and I will have to re-jailbreak it, re-install all of my apps and ringtones ect??

or will it set me on my vodafone network irreversably?

    Can anyone help me out?

Also what are the benefits of the upgrade? Are there any stand out next features?

  19. Mmuhammad Says:

Max, don’t update your iphone to 2.0 or else all the jailbroken stuff will be gone and your iphone will be locked. I accidentally updated mine and then i had to pay 35 USD to get my iphone normal because i didn’t know how to unlock it

  20. Max Says:

oh, but is there any advantage to the update, ie can you have the app store even if you are not attached to a contract on a local iphone carrying network, and download the free apps?

I really would like a few of these.

Is there no way to re-jailbreak your phone yourself?

  21. Adam Says:

So does this mean if I buy my iPhone 3G, unlock it, update to 2.1 when it is released, then re-jailbreak it, my iPhone will be absolutely fine?

  22. Paul Says:

Were you able to restore you SMS, Notes, Contacts, etc. from your iTunes backup? I have a jailbroken iPhone 1.1.1 and want to update to 2.0 but I am afraid my iTunes backup won’t work because it was made when the phone was in a jailbroken state. Anyone who can offer help on the matter is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

  26. stan Says:

hey i have a iphone 1.1.4 non 3g in Canada which is on Rogers sim. I want to upgrade my jailbroken iphone but i dont want to lose all the info and re-jailbreak it.

  27. FSP Says:

    Confused.

Uppgraded my US iPhone 2G from its jailbroken and unlocked state to version 2.1 through itunes 8. It removed the jailbreak but retained the unlock and DIDN’T brick my phone. Does anyone know:

    1) Why would Apple suddenly tolerate unlocked phones?

    2) Have they placed a time-bomb on the phone which will render it brick-like once more in a few days???!!!

    3) Any word on whether it will be safe to accept future updates?

    Thanks!
