One would think that the United States Army would be using some of the most hi-tech translation devices in the world. Well, they are: iPods.
You heard me right! The United States Army’s 10th Mountain Division, a light infantry division, has apparently been using around 260 modified iPods and iPod Nanos running a specialized translation application developed by Vcom3D named Vcommunicator Mobile.
The version of Vcommunicator Mobile used by the United States Army is intended for English to Arabic translation and can be applied to a variety of situations experienced by troops on the ground in Iraq.
This software works by providing the soldier using it with a list of phrases in the local dialect that applies to whatever task he or she is handling. Take for example the task of setting up and maintaining roadblock. After doing so, the soldier equipped with this device would select the “Vehicle Checkpoint” option from the iPod’s menu where he or she is then given a list of English to Arabic phrases such as “what is your name,” “open the trunk,” or “are you carrying any weapons?” The phrase list is hierarchically structured such that the most important/common phrases are at the top of the list, and the less important ones are lower down on the list.
The greatest aspect of this software is the fact that it provides so many forms of the Arabic phrase/word in question. Not only does it provide a transliteration (e.g. shoo-cran = thank you,) but it also provides the phrase/word in Arabic script, and a video demonstrating the correct pronunciation along with accompanying hand gestures.
Due to the fact that the iPod is an internationally recognized device, it is intuitive for both U.S. troops as well as Iraqi civilians. The iPod’s familiar design also helps to break down some of the cultural barriers found between U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians.
For all intents and purposes, an iPod with this software installed, needs few to no accessories whatsoever, save for perhaps optional ones such as a dust cover, armband, and speaker.
If you’re interested in learning even more about this awesome application, I would strongly urge that you check out Vcom3D’s website here. It provides you with a great overview/demonstration of all the application’s functions and uses through the use of a very unique presentation.
