Apple tops 100 million App Store downloads, could see 1 billion in first year

It was just last week that Steve Jobs announced that Apple has seen more than 100 million downloads coming from the App Store so far, and by all means that is a pretty significant level to reach. But perhaps more important is that if users continue to download at the current rate, which was around 70 million in August, that the App Store could see one billion downloads before the end of the first year. Pretty impressive, especially considering that the song downloads in iTunes did not reach that level until the second year. Of course we can only assume that some of the excitement (downloads) is due to the fact that there are quite a bit of worthy apps available for free, and lets face it, more people will play when its free as opposed to $.99 each. But nevertheless, should Apple reach that 1 billion mark in the first year, that would still be an impressive feat. It was also noted that the App Store currently has more than 3,000 apps available of which 90 percent are less than $9.99 ad more than 600 are currently free.
