With Best Buy preparing to begin (on September 7) selling the iPhone 3G, it seems they are also planning on pushing the extra accessories on you. Honestly its not really that big of a deal that they try to upsell you, I would think plenty of people would be buying at least one accessory anyway, but it seems that Best Buy is going about it in a slightly misleading manor.
According to the ad, they will set up your “phone and email” for free, as long as you “buy the iPhone 3G and any featured accessory package.” Sadly those packages are expected to retail for anywhere from $106 to $234. Really its not hard to imagine spending an extra hundred bucks especially if you purchase a car adapter, FM transmitter or headset, however its important to point out that this type of setup would be performed entirely for free from Apple.
Heck, the phone has to be setup during activation, and its not likely that they are going to move your contacts over from your current phone one by one for you. Then as far as the email, this would require you to give them both your username and password for the setup, call me paranoid, but I would rather keep that to myself.
Thanks Best Buy, lets just hope you don’t take advantage of many customers with your ’special’ offer.

What’s the rule about upselling? No more than 30% of the original purchased item? $200 is a big chunk for an add-on order, especially to just get your iPhone set up (something that should be given for free).
You’re right Rob. It is a ripoff!
