Honestly, I’m not quite sure why the folks down at Apple decided to spend time fiddling with the iPhone’s Safari browser-layout instead of tackling a more important issue, but hey, I’ll take what I can get!
Apple has decided to now display a Google search field next to the address bar by default. The iPhone’s 2.1 firmware required that you tap the magnifying glass on the toolbar to bring up the Google search function, no longer! To accommodate this field, Apple has moved the refresh button from outside of the address bar to within it.
Now that they’re done tinkering with Safari, Apple can move on to addressing more important issues with the iPhone!
Note: Firmware v2.2 has yet to be officially released for the iPhone and is still in the testing stage.

I think they are trying to simplify the browser.
