Location based social network Brightkite is just about set to launch their native iPhone application. So far this seems to have been a highly requested app, but that aside I would think that it will be well received thanks to a combination of the ability to take advantage of the iPhone 3G’s built in GPS and the existing user base.
Overall the Brightkite app seems to offer many of the same features that are found on the current website, but obviously this will allow for much more mobility and perhaps more useful for many of the users.
To begin with the app will allow you to check in and have your location found automatically. As for checking in, you can opt to simply check in with your location or also add a note or photo along with your location.
Additionally Brightkite will allow you to check out what is happening nearby. You can adjust the radius of the nearby search, and also choose to send a message and chat with any users that are nearby. Other features of the app allow you to track your friends and their activity, choose to have notifications sent via SMS message and even have Brightkite add a real name to a location.
Unfortunately this is still just listed as “coming soon” to the App Store, or in other words it sounds like the app has been submitted and now they are just waiting on that final approval. I have had a Brightkite account for a while now but have neglected to really use the service very often, I am very excited to see this native app coming and think it may help to encourage my use.
As this app is still unavailable, the Brightkite team offered a nice video demonstration showing off the features.
