Official iPhone 3G tethering plan delayed by AT&T network issues

Despite the availability of a few apps such as the now pulled NetShare and PdaNet which is available in Cydia users are not supposed to be tethering their iPhone to their laptops.

From the beginning, AT&T made it clear that tethering was not permitted and followed up stating that an official plan was not something that was expected to be released. Of course stories always change and most recently it seems that the initial reports were not entirely true.

The latest information is still unconfirmed, but it is reported to have come from an “accurate” insider at AT&T and claims that an official plan is indeed in the works.

“According to a colleague of mine who works with AT&T (who has been fairly accurate in the past), Apple and AT&T have been developing an iPhone tethering plan, similar to that allowed for Blackberry users.”

Sounds great, and its something that we can only hope will come true. According to the source, the reasoning behind the delay is due to legalities and the network issues that AT&T has experienced since the launch of the iPhone 3G.

“The reason we haven’t heard or seen anything about it, is because AT&T is being extremely paranoid of how the service will run on their network.”

I hate to wish any bad luck on the popularity of the iPhone, but just maybe, if it was not as popular we would already have a tethering plan available. Personally I am hoping that an official plan comes available, but understand that many would not have any interest.
