Just yesterday we saw a report coming from MacWorld Sweden about Telia preparing a MMS app, and now another announcement regarding the availability of MMS on the iPhone has surfaced.
This latest information is come courtesy of Mobispine, who have announced the availability of an MMS app with plans to begin selling it to mobile carriers across the globe. According to the press release, Mobispine is planning to offer a “white label” MMS service for iPhone to global operators.” Their plan is to offer the app to wireless carriers who “have the rights to sell iPhones in their markets.” Of course, just because they have plans, that does not mean that every carrier will think its a great idea.
The app from Mobispine is said to be integrated with your iPhones Contacts app and will allow the user to either send a new photo or choose one from your existing collection. The incoming, as well as outgoing messages will also be managed directly from within the Mobispine app.
MMS, or the lack of, has long been blamed on Apple. However after seeing a solution like this, the focus of blame seems to shift a little toward the carriers. I wonder how many carriers will take advantage of a solution like this, and if so, will they decide to add a second charge specifically for MMS messaging, or can they roll it into the SMS package?
I am sure plenty of people will be excited by the possibility of MMS messaging coming to the iPhone, but which carriers do you think will be jumping at the chance to offer this “white label” service. Seems to me, if this is possible coming from Mobispine, then individual carriers could have already been working on their own solution.
