App Store now has over 10,000 applications

The iTunes App Store opened back on July 11, 2008 with a mere 500 applications, 150 of which were free. Now, four months later, the shelves of the App Store are stocked with over 10,000 applications and hundreds of new ones are developed every week.

As I’m sure you’re well aware, these 10,000 applications range from practical time management apps to silly games that are great for passing time. At the most basic level, the App Store has become a great place for iPhone developers to make money, iPhone users to find just what they’re looking for, and Apple to take a small share of it all.

Either way you look at it, Apple’s decision to take application development off the “black market” and channel it through the centralized App Store was, in my opinion, one of its best decisions concerning the iPhone.
