iPhone firmware 2.2 now available

As rumored, and just barely into Friday, Apple has made iPhone firmware 2.2 available. And just like the rumored release date, the feature list seems to mirror what we were expecting.

It seems that Google Street View, along with over-the-air podcast downloading has been added. Additionally, the Maps app also offers public transit and walking directions and location sharing. Now for the items that did not get included — can we say copy/paste and MMS. Oh well, we can always hold out hope for firmware 2.3.

Of course, the standard warning goes out to anyone with a jailbroken iPhone — do not update just yet! That is unless you can live without your jailbroken apps for a little while.

As always, you can grab the update by clicking the “Check for Update” button in iTunes. If you get it downloaded and installed be sure to let us know of any goodies that you find.

It’s great that apple have improved on google maps with street view and all that, but as mentioned in the article, i expected (at the least) to finally have MMS and Copy/Cut & Paste functionality…very disappointed with the 2.2 update! As for improved stability, i updated this morning and Safari has crashed 3 times.

Nice improvements. I can only hope Apple is activly working on adding MMS, copy/paste, and message forward.

Can we installed it with our jailbroken Iphones ??
or we have to wait ?

  4. Robert Nelson Says:

    Hey comboy,

If you install firmware 2.2 on a currently jailbroken iPhone it will no longer be jailbroken. We (myself included) will have to wait until the Dev Team releases and updated version of Pwnage Tool and/or QuickPwn that supports firmware version 2.2. Currently they have no release date announced, but hopefully it will be soon.

I took the chance and upgrade my unlocked 2g iPhone to 2.2 and have not had a problem. Street view is not bad, but will be better when more towns and cities are scanned!
