Podcaster app gets updated, now at version 1.4

Sadly, as iPhone firmware 2.2 has added the ability to directly download podcasts, there has become less of a need for third party apps such as Podcaster and MobileCast. That said, I still think they have their place and it is nice to see this latest update come. Originally announced on Friday, the Podcaster app has received an update which brings it to version 1.4.

There are some new features that come along with version 1.4, but perhaps the biggest is that the 14-day trial period has been removed. Users can opt to not pay and continue to use Podcaster, but they will be limited to a maximum of three subscriptions. Of course, paid users will not have that same restriction.

You can check out the Almerica Blog to read the complete list of changes, and also to get the latest version of Podcaster. Additionally it can also be downloaded (for jailbreakers only) from within Cydia.

So, why would anyone want to use this? Just for starters, one nice point about using a third party podcast download client is that there are not any download limitations. The built-in support that came along with firmware 2.2 limits users to files that are 10MB or smaller when on a cellular connection. Podcaster does not have that same limitation. Based on that alone, I can only hope to see continued support for third party alternatives.
