While we have already given you our holiday wish list for accessories, I think we should take some time and share some thoughts and build an iPhone feature wish list. You know, for all those features that we are hoping to have added to the iPhones feature list in the future.
So, where should we get started. Of course we already know that plenty of you are hoping for copy and paste as well as MMS, so while those can be added to this list, they will not take a high priority.
For me, aside from always working on added stability, my biggest feature wish would be a preview screen in the Text (SMS) app and the Mail app. I am looking for a way to be able to preview a link that has been sent to me, and not have to leave the app. Something along the lines of the preview that the Twitterific app already has.
I often receive a link either by email or SMS that I want to check out, and to click on that link and have it launch Mobile Safari is kind of annoying. Especially considering I just want to check that link and return to my email or text messages and not surf the Internet. It means I then have to close Mobile Safari, and relaunch either Mail or SMS and then find the place where I left off.
It seems that something along this line would be possible, like I mentioned, it is already done very well in Twitterific. I am sure that I am not alone here, hopefully we can see that sometime in the future. So that is currently my biggest wish, yes even bigger then copy and paste or MMS.
What is your feature wish? Leave some comments below, and I will update the post as new ideas come in…
So far we have:
- Copy & Paste
- MMS
- Link preview in Mail app
- Link preview in Text (SMS) app
- and more…

Turn by Turn Navigation (please!)
802.11G Wireless Sync with PC (my $120 Zune has this)
Makes syncing subscribed Podcasts much easier.

How about the ability to use landscape oriented type keyboard for SMS and email. Built in. Just tilt the phone. Let’s get the simple things right.

Better sound customization and notification options! I want the ability to select any ringtone for events, such as a custom tone for email, a different custom tone for SMS, etc. — and have the option of alerts repeating x # of times every x minutes. My previous phone ran Windows Mobile, and I used a third-party program that gave me those options. I am really annoyed that with my iPhone I often miss notifications because they happen just once, and that I can’t use custom tones for all events.
Also, individual apps that toggle WiFi and Bluetooth. It is really annoying to have to drill down and slide a control when a “badged” icon to toggle the function would be so much easier and faster.
An application that could call the AT&T voice dialing number with a single button press would be nice, but I understand it isn’t possible with the current development tools.
I’d like the option in mail to return to the message list after deleting a message, not automatically opening the next message.
More Bluetooth functions would be so helpful. As the iPhone is also an iPod, being able to use Bluetooth for music would be great, especially since there are several devices on the market (including my Bluetooth car speakerphone) that could take Bluetooth music and route it to a vehicle’s FM radio.
And another vote for WiFi syncing!

I would LOVE to see an Auto-Allow for location services (or the option to shut off location services for specific apps like Camera) so I don’t get that annoying pop-up every time I open Camera. Of course you can turn off all location services, but they you have to choose between annoying pop-up in Camera or Cripple Maps app.

Hmm I would like most of the above and also these.
Be able to sort images in the camera roll into different folders.
Obviously video recording (always hopeful)
And probably some more and I will post then when I think of them!

I want a “previous app” button or key combo.
I’d prefer it to be universally available, but
if necessary it could be available per app as
long as mobile safari is the first to get it.

FLASH!

I’m not sure that will be in the next update

How about a little (i) icon in the corner of each message in an SMS conversation, that flips the little message bubble over (like the weather app, or dashboard widgets on the mac) and gives you options like “(Edit and) Forward this message”, “Erase just this message from the conversation”, etc.
“Right click” context menus for tapping with two fingers?
‘T would be cool, IMO.

I would love to be able to customize the whole GUI like you can when you jailbreak the phone ( not a fan of jail breaking it ) and the ability to
have a video camera recorder build in.

Andy Says:
“An application that could call the AT&T voice dialing number with a single button press would be nice, but I understand it isn’t possible with the current development tools.”
I think you can just download any of the quick dialing apps and insert your voice dialing number. I recomend these free once. Speed Dial #1 - 4

White list and black list feature for incoming emails would be great.

I would like more choices when adding things to the calendar which require repeats. Something similar to what is allowed in Entourage. I would also like color dots on the monthly calendar to indicate the kind of appointment.

I agree with RhDo regarding forwarding and deleting individual text bubbles in SMS. Similarly, I’m asking Santa for the ability to delete individual call logs in Recent Calls. And since I’ve been a very good boy this year, how about sending/receiving contacts, calendar events, and notes via bluetooth.

Landscape text and email.
Forward text.

A one touch button that would turn on and off the Bluetooth feature! It takes too many steps just to turn it on (About 4)!
December 4th, 2008 at 7:20 am
What about some options about deleting images in camera roll ? Not only one by one, but selecting the ones I want to delete, or even delete all images.
I would also have the option to set the calendar reminders to any time before. I need to set reminders a month before for my work and I can’t do it now.
December 4th, 2008 at 9:29 am
I WOLD LIKE TO SEE AN OPEN BLUETOOTH THAT WE COULD USE ANY BLUETOOTH ENABLED DEVICE TO SYNC WITH. KEYNOTE FOR THE IPHONE. IPHOTO FOR THE IPHONE, VIDEO RECORDING, MMS OBVIOUSLY, VOICE DIALING, BETTER GAMES ALTHOUGH BROTHERS IN ARMS IS A REAL START.
December 4th, 2008 at 9:39 am
Would love a link betweeen
Calander and contacts so when you start typing a name a drop down list on contacts appears to select from this eliminating typing these full name to set an appointment. Also a customized drop down selection menu to select appointment type, lunch, meeting, etc.

A Deamon that switch your Wifi to On or Off depending on your location (That you would set on the map with a Bookmark) and would connect to a certain WiFi Router depending on that location. Would not have to turn it on or off anymore.
4 Deamon Slots for Apps devlopment that the iPhone user would install like an App for certain applications feature.
More bluetooth device compatibility like a bluetooth keyboard.
Windows SDK… ?
Also, like others said: FLASH, copy paste, Video Recording, landscape keyboard everywhere.
So many other I forget now…
December 7th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
The iPhone needs profiles for the ringer and other notifications. And the notifications line SMS, vmail, and email need to be able to customize the sound, the number of repeats and they need to be louder!
December 8th, 2008 at 2:13 am
Also it would be good if you didn’t have to put your password in if the applicatin or song is free… It’s getting really annoying!
December 8th, 2008 at 4:41 am
ability to repeat calendar events by individual days instead of only everyday every week etc
December 9th, 2008 at 10:12 am
How about video? Why doesn’t anybody ever talk about video on iPhone. That would be #1 for me. The whole rest of the cell phone world has it.
December 12th, 2008 at 6:03 am
Most things have been said. What about:
Any MP3 as a ringtone?
Most phones have been doing that since MP3’s were first supported on mobiles.
December 13th, 2008 at 7:55 am
We’re big SMS users in Europe, so I’d like to :
- be able to forward an SMS to another mobile phone number
- have a character counter so that I know when I approach the 160 limit
(these have been common on mobile phones here for years)
- a portrait multitap keypad as an alternative to the keyboard (I have big fingertips and even typing in landscape is a challenge)

While the iPhone 3G is a great mobile device and I love mine, it’s list of shortcomings is a long one. Most of these things come standard on cheap or free phones. COME ON APPLE, it takes more than a fancy interface these days.
- MMS(a Duh! thing)
- Video recording (a Duh! thing)
- Real GPS functionality like travel speed and direction (a Duh! thing)
- Decent mail functions like message sorting, multiple mark-read, etc. If this is supposed to be a business device now, you they need to make it perform like a business tool, not a toy for teenagers
- Bluetooth compatibility (phone-phone, etc)
- Open file system so you can use as storage device(a Duh! thing)
- Decent battery life
- Ability to replace the battery myself(a Duh! thing)
- Wi-fi sync with PC(a Duh! thing)
- Better support for syncing with PC apps like Outlook (it’s more than 70% of the worldwide market). Actually, I’d LOVE to see Microsoft Office apps on the iPhone! I’d gladly pay for it.
- App for tasks (like in Outlook) that an set reminders by time. In other words, a real t-do list app should be standard.
- Ability to sync to more than one PC (Come on Apple, you don’t own everybody’s music. Some of us own quite a bit of music ripped from CD’s and store it on different PC’s…get out of your DRM dream world, you can’t control everything)
- Ability to create and name playlists (other than default On-the-Go) that can be synced with PC(a Duh! thing)
- Email/bluetooth contacts….send and receive (a Duh! thing)
- Ability to summon the keyboard on demand. I’d like to be able to enter edit mode in online apps like Google Docs. (a Duh! thing)
- Support for memory cards (a Duh! thing)
- Probably many more that I can’t think of right now.
Thanks for listening…….I just hope Apple is listening
