Sure they say most criminals are stupid, and I guess that statement has been proven true once again. It seems that despite how often we hear complaints about MobileMe, we have at least one user who will most likely keep his account forever because it helped him recover his stolen iPhone. Yup, thanks to MobileMe he was able to catch a criminal. Personally I have enjoyed MobileMe and at the risk of causing future issues, I have to say that I have not had many issues with it, but this news just makes me a little happier that I have it — just in case.

The story goes, iPhone user Rob had his iPhone stolen while he was at the dry cleaner, and while there someone managed to steal his phone. Assuming that it was going to be gone forever, and not wanting to live without, he purchased a new one that same night. Then the next day, he began to notice strange contacts appear on his new phone, well it turns out that the thief had begun entering his information and thanks to the syncing of MobileMe, they were then being moved to Rob’s new iPhone.

“It didn’t take long for me to realize that MobileMe was leading me right to the thief!” wrote Rob.

Rob then proceeded to make a few calls to those numbers (and also to the police) and he shortly had the phone back in his possession. Sounds like good news, but now he was stuck with two iPhones, so what is one to do, well, eBay it of course. Stories like this make me feel just a little better about the $99 that I pay each year for MobileMe.
