University of Cologne announce plans to purchase 45,000 iPhones

We have seen a few schools here is the US announce plans to offer iPhones to students and now the University of Cologne in Germany has announced some plans for a possible purchase of their own. According to Andre Bresges, who is a professor, the university is considering the purchase of 45,000 iPhones.

The plan is to be able to issue these out to students with the main reason of being able to keep the students better notified of upcoming events. Additionally they are also considering using the iPhones to develop applications that will help the students better manage their schedules.

Nothing was mentioned of who would pay for the monthly service fees, and whether the university would also cover those or if they would be up to the individual students. Either way a free iPhone sounds pretty nice.
