Despite a downturn industry-wide of smartphone sales, the iPhone’s Q3 market share has tripled from the year-ago quarter, up to 12.9% worldwide, vs 3.4% for Q3 2007. That puts the iPhone in 3rd place worldwide behind Nokia (42.4%) and RIM (15.9%). Nokia’s lead is still looking insurmountable, but RIM is only a sliver ahead of the iPhone in worldwide market share and if rumors of a $99 iPhone at Wal-Mart bear fruit, I’m sure we’ll see that gap close FAST.
In Europe, the iPhone beat out RIM to come in second place behind Nokia with a 15.6% market share.
In North America, things look even brighter for Apple, with the iPhone’s share over 25%, bringing it in second place behind RIM. Even more exciting, this marks the first quarter that the iPhone has outsold all the Windows Mobile devices combined.
